The Pac-12 Thread....

4So.......Thanks for the Jag update.  And, thanks to the SC crowd for clearing up the Woods medical condition.

You are welcome.

Oh, and sad to hear about your Alum.  Junior is one of the all time greats, he will be missed by many well beyond the LA basin.

It is sad. Junior, from most accounts, was decent man. I hope he has found the peace he was seeking.

Is there a Bruin football fan left in the Country?

I heard Ivan and Beano trying to compare Mora and the situation at UCLA to the time when Pete went to USC.  Nice try to fill airtime, but UCLA is never going to hang with the recruiting of USC.  Although, maybe they will keep some of those kids who don't get offered by USC in SOCAL.

And, there is always basketball season, right?

Cant say for sure if i will be at the Tennessee game.  Like I said I travel to differnt games.  My parents have moved various places so sometimes we go to games not involving Oregon too.  since they moved east we are still able to see Oregon play later in the day.  I have also recently been to Minnesota's new stadium and Army in NY thanks to my parents living in these places over the last few years.  My brother and sister still live in Eugene so I will try to get there next time I go visit.

It looks like Stanford has lost their AD, Bob Bowlsby. He's taking the position of commissioner of the Big 12.

What affect does this move have on Stanford's football program? My guess would be a major one. Stanford has maintained a high level despite Harbaugh's departure, on the field and especially recruiting.

The loss of Luck will hurt next season, but the loss of the AD, presumably the real head of the football program, could hurt much worse.

OK drkato, what say you to this development? Others??

Since their head coach is a Stanford alum who considers Stanford football HC job his dream job and since his first yr of recruiting produced a great recruiting class, I expect no impact on future recruiting classes. Now if Shaw were to leave for the NFL 3-4 yrs from now then the story might change.

If Stanford continues to play at a high level, and develop good qb talent then NFL HC jobs will be offered to Shaw.  If you can prove you can develop solid qb's then there will always be a job for you in the NFL. Look what Harbaugh did for Alex Smith last yr without a full offseason program! You don't think the NFL is taking notice? It's not just college footbal people who are watching the Stanford program over the next few yrs. The NFL will probably raid some of its offensive coaches over the next few yrs if they continue to produce offensive talent. The price of being a succesful program that runs a pro style offense.

As a Stanfiord fan all I can do is enjoy the ride as long as it last. It won't last forever.

davidd2152, well said! Makes sense. Keep your thoughts coming re Stanford and the Pac-12. We need posters of your ilk.

Who knows? The run might last longer than you think. The talent and coaching seems to be there, plenty of tradition as well.

If you get any info re Stanford that might be useful and feel like it, let us know. Anything other than the AD news coming out of Stanford?

Hell that's no big deal. The new ASU coach is on his 3rd dream job in 3 years. Now that's an accomplisment not easily obtained!!!!  LOL
This guy "dreams" in quantity.
The above being said I am impressed with both the disciplne (post Erickson) and conditioning. They will be ready to play.
I just hope it's a Frank Kush brand of ball.

OK, YamD, they're smart. I like to think USC is similar in the general student body. Maybe smarter in one way, We know you don't have to be THAT smart to play football and we like to win....so....LMAO

USC is a great school in the winningest atletic conference, BY FAR, in college sports. As a private schools it excells in many ares but the reputation that Stanford has is definately earned.
By the way...ther's a school in South Bend that ain't bad either academically and you never need look far for emplyment if you have a degree from there either. Wink

link to article by one of the SJMercury bloggers listing his ideas for new AD. Personnally, I favor Gene Washington, former Stanford and 49er great wide receiver and current director of football operations for the NFL or Dr Condoleezza Rice.

davidd2152, definitely don't want you guys getting Condi, that bird is tougher than nails and sharper than a tack. She's too heavy weight for an AD position and would make life tough for the Trojans. Besides, she one the names bandied about as a running mate for Romney. The ticket could use some balls....

Spring ball is over. Draft is over. What's next? All football fans can do now is prognosticate what the future might hold.

The NFL draft is always interesting to me, and to a small extent a barometer of a College Program. As I peruse the 2013 draft projections I have seen many PAC 12ers slated to go high. Some of which are:

Matt Barkley (QB) USC- As high as #1
Star Lotulelei (DT) Utah- As high as #1
Marquess Wilson (WR) WSU- As high as #2
Robert Woods (WR) USC- As high as #4
TJ McDonald (FS) USC - As high as #5
Keenan Allen (WR) Cal- As high as #10

I've also seen in the first round Desmond Trufant, Chase Thomas, Khaled Holmes and Shayne Skov.

Of course these projections could all go the way of Burfict, but there should be no question that there are some very talented players walking the sidelines of this league.

Offensive MVP- Matt Barkley
Defensive MVP- Star Lotulelei
Freshman OTY- Shaq Thompson

We'll see.

Eirespal, seems like the 2012 draft year was an off year for the Pac-12. We should be back to battery in 2013, although I wouldn't be upset if a few of the Trojans stayed that senior year.LOL.

As the recruiting continues to improve so will the draft selections out of the Pac....

As you say, spring games are done. We are in the "no news is good news" mode. Few DUIs or "blown knees" coming out of the Pac. Are you listening Oregon??? LOL.

Trucker,

We are listening.  We have to keep all of em on lock down until Fall.  The craxy kids of summer are coming to us all.  Maybe UW will get into a whirl of trouble this off season.

Until then, the big talk is this stupid playoff arrangement.  I'm not seeing how this is good for CFB.  And, our conference.  The Bowl games will be completely meaningless with attendance hitting rock bottom.  The regular season will become meaningless if your team suffers 1 loss as you will be out of the beauty contest.......Why is the PAC and B1G going along with this nonsense to save the BCS from an antitrust lawsuit?

The Bowl games will be completely meaningless with attendance hitting rock bottom.

It will depend on how they handle the location of the games. For example, one of the ideas that is being discussed is rotating the "semi-final" games through the BCS bowls. This would tend to make the bowl games more important.

The regular season will become meaningless if your team suffers 1 loss as you will be out of the beauty contest.......

I have to disagree. Your team being out after one loss, is what happens now, in the current beauty contest. Think about it. There has been at least one season for Oregon and 2 for USC where our teams suffered that one loss that kept them from the NCG.

For example, last season. Oregon loses the opener to LSU and that pretty well ended their NCG dreams in the first game of the season. With a playoff, Oregon still has a chance to get into the playoff and win the NCG. To my mind, that makes the rest of Oregon's games even more important.

Some Oregon fans have explained the loss to USC last season by saying it was a "trap game". When I disagreed and said there is no way that playing USC with a shot at the NCG makes it a trap game. They responded that Oregon had no shot at the NCG because of the loss to LSU. Let's assume they are correct about that. With a playoff, Oregon has a shot at the NCG if they beat USC.

TJ12, a two-edged sword with that logic, though bro, Therefore the LSU loss becomes LESS important and so does any one loss during that regular season. After all, there's still a playoff......

True. Everything has it's pros and cons. However, I feel that the longer fans feel that their team has a shot at a championship, the better. It can also serve to make the following games even more important. Think about it, in the minds of many Oregon fans, their shot at the NCG was lost after the game against LSU. In their minds, it diminished the importance of the USC game (even if only slightly for some).

Now look at the Oregon/USC game last year. As important as that game was, how much more important would it have been if Oregon needed the win to get to the playoffs and have a shot at the NCG?
