All my life I have heard people joking that the only thing to do when you live in the middle of nowhere(like I do) is sit around and watch the grass grow.  I am here to report a new activity that has taken hold here:  watching the rivers rise.  The Santa Fe River was scheduled to crest on Saturday morning and by Friday afternoon, was well out of its banks and was close to bridge level at several crossings in Columbia and Alachua counties.  WHen I left work Friday, I went to Meet my wife for dinner at a favorite restaurant in High Springs in Alachua County.  Crossing the Santa Fe River bridge on U. S. 27, I was surprised to see about a hundred cars parked on both sides of the road and both sides of the bridge.  There were dozons of people walking on the bridge, looking at the water, and dozens more in lawn chairs by the side of the road, watching the river rise.  After we ate, we drove home on U. S. 441, and the scene was exactly the same at the Santa Fe RIver bridge on that road.  I've never seen anything like it and thought it was weird and surreal.

The only thing I can say about people wathcing the river rise, is that maybe their cable was out.

A Mike Nesmith tune that was on the Monkees first release.  The song had previously been released by The Butterfield Blues Band.  In the late 80's, Run DMC used the song as and it's signature riff for one of their more popular singles.

Watching the Rivers rise is a favorite pastime here in Sacto too, Rock!  But they don't rise in the summertime!  Sacramento being several feet BELOW both of the major rivers that flow through town (Levees keep things correct, for the most part) make river-watching not just a winter/spring diversion,  flooding here is considered on a par w/ the City of New Orleans, in terms of potential problems.  And if an earthquake busts Folsom Dam (to the east) or Shasta Dam (to the north), I'll be floating downstream to SF Bay, like it or not!

I am not pleased that Pablo Sandoval will be starting the All-Star game instead of David Wright.  That is a travesty.

Well, I guess if someone in particular was responsible for the bad selection, it would be a travesty.  But it's hard to blame the SF fans for voting more often than NY fans (and there are alot more NY fans), the selection process is stupid, and then they tie it all to home field in the Series, which is a real travesty.  Plus, it seems to me that Wright got in a few years ago over Pablo when Pablo was leading the league in hitting for a bad SF team, and got ignored in the voting, so it sort of evened out.  I expect Pablo to get one AB, and be replaced by Wright, who is far more deserving of the position this year.
To be honest, it was a two-edged sword for the Giants, since having Pablo voted in as a starter probably cost Madison Bumgarner or Ryan Vogelsong a deserved spot on the pitching staff.  Hopefully none of this costs the Giants home field in game one of the 2012 World Series.
