Everyone seems to agree that Jason Kidd will one day make an excellent NBA coach. He got a jump on his future this week, when he blasted off on a group of officials for doing a poor job and for not paying his Dallas Mavericks the respect they deserve as defending 2011 NBA champions.

The NBA announced on Wednesday that Kidd has been fined $25,000 for comments he made following a Monday night loss to the Thunder in Oklahoma City. The Mavericks led late but wound up losing 95-91 and shot just 10 free throws while Oklahoma City attempted 33. Kidd was upset about that free throw disparity as well as a late, questionable foul call.

Here are the offending quotes via ESPNDallas.com.
"We don't get the benefit of the whistle," Kidd said. "I don't think we're looked upon as champions, but that's a whole other story. Dirk [Nowitzki] should live at the line if they would call it the way it's supposed to be. But, he doesn't."

"He didn't foul him. It was a bad call. Clean block," Kidd said. "I just said [to referee Pat Fraher] it wasn't a foul. He blocked the ball and after the play he said he bumped him with his body. I don't think so. It was a bad night for the officials. It happens."
According to StoryTellersContracts.com, Kidd, 38, is on the books for $9.6 million this season.

what's funny is that Jason is saying that as NBA champions the Mavs deserve the calls. But if they had lost to the Heat last year, would he complain when the Mavs didn't get the calls against Miami this season? I think the bias in the NBA is toward the stars first and then towards the home teams.

"Look back a few years Phoenix and San Antonio playoff series might do.  "

The rule was wrong, but the refs called that EXACTLY ACCORDING TO THE RULES.

A better example would be the 2002 Lakers-Kings series.  With the refs, Sacramento wins the series.  It's that simple.

I agree that the officiating in the NBA has been getting worse.  Obviously they must have some type of evaluation system.  In that system, I would like to think that officials who have consistently bad rating are eventually demoted from games in the NBA.  I've watched games where the leagues so-called "stars" have take 3,4 maybe 5 steps to the basket and it go uncalled.  Another call rarely seen is a guard blatently extending his arm and pushing the defended off to get a shot.  Clearly penalizing these defenders for good positioning and footwork.

I look at it this way.  The NBA is a business.  If referees allowing the "stars" to be better "stars" by not making calls help the business....well, that's a financial win-win.  The integrity of the rules and the game is far less important than the dollars that can be made. Plus...call me crazy, but I still think there is sometimes a correlation between the gambling world and how some of the calls are made.  I don't necessarily discount what Tim Donaghy said about a lot more refs involved with shady calls and trying to control the outcome of games.

Let's hope that's not the truth.

This officiating problem has been going on for years in this league.  Basketball is the greatest game on the planet and the NBA screws it up constantly.  I have played, coached and loved basketball my entire life and can barely get myself to watch a NBA game.  I would love to watch basketball at its highest level but the officiating is so pathetic that I enevitably end up turning the channel.  Is there a way the all powerful David Stern can fix this problem?  Bring on March Madness!

The Killer

When he does enter coaching he will need a good nickname.  "Hey, Coach Killer!" seems so fitting.

I was watching a Knick game a few weeks back a clear path foul was called.  Knick player went to the line, knocked down the free throws, the refs went to the replay and decided it wasn't a clear path foul, so took the points off the board.  AND gave the opposing team possession of the ball?????  Literally the most assinine call I have ever seen.  Made me think there is game fixing in this league.

Don't know what Jason is complaining about. After Tuesday nights game against the knicks, you would tend to think that the refs are on the Mavs payroll. Jason nearly took Lin's head off on a drive to the basket and knocked him flying, with no call from the refs. The refs were also blind to a multitude of illegal moving picks, other maulings in the paint, and the ridiculous techinical on Chandler.

Don't know where the NBA gets these refs from, or if there is any quality control, however, don't be suprised if more players and coaches are fined, or there are brawls on the court. I wish the knicks had enforcer types now, such as Oakley and Mason to put some fear into the opposition and prevent the beatings and maulings in the paint.

That's why I don't like the NBA and basketball in general. There is too much subjectivity. Too much is determined by the refs. Other sports have this to some degree, but they tend to be consistent for both sides. F.E. IN football, they "let them play" aka not call many fouls on both sides. In MLB, strike zone is usually consistent. NBA is a joke as I for one don't know how you can call or not call 2 thirds of fouls due to such high speed of the game. It's hard to see even with replay sometimes.
