Kobe Bryant took a hit in the pocketbook for not doing this. (CBSSports.com)

23 of the 24 2012 NBA All-Stars showed up for a mandatory Friday morning media availability in Orlando. The one absentee -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant -- called in sick. That proved to be a costly decision.

USA Today reports that the NBA fined Bryant $40,000 for multiple All-Star Weekend absences.
The NBA fined the Los Angeles Lakers guard $40,000 for missing a news conference and a mandated charity appearance for NBA Cares during All-Star weekend in Orlando.

In addition, the NBA fined Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce and guard Rajon Rondo $20,000 each for missing their charity appearances.
Reporters stood around for the better part of an hour on Friday, waiting for Bryant to show up. Eventually, a league spokesman informed the crowd that Bryant would not be attending due to an illness.

Bryant did attend events later on Friday and eventually met with reporters before a Saturday practice session. There, he immediately brought up his absence when asked a question he didn't like.

"What type of question is that to ask me? Are you kidding me?" Bryant said. "Man, I was sick the other day so I didn't have to hear this."

According to StoryTellersContracts.com, Bryant's 2011-2012 salary with the Lakers is $25.2 million, tops in the league. The $40,000 fine represents roughly 1/630 of his salary. The equivalent fine for someone making $50,000 a year would be roughly $79.

Bryant's West team defeated the East, 152-149. Bryant finished with 27 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 2 steals in 34 minutes. He also suffered a broken nose when he was fouled by Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.

Report: Kobe fined for skipping All-Star events

Since I'm now not only a moron but a complete loser, I will still not fail to dissappoint you. Not only you should die in the car with Mr. Stern but I am nice enough to allow you to choose another victim to be with you along with Mr. Stern. Choose wisely, but seeing that your a very intelligent individual I'm sure you will make the right choice. Again have a wonderful day :)

LOL   You're just another one of those little men that hide behind keyboards and monitors while they talk nonesense.  I know your type, you would never talk like that in front of anybody.

I'm done with you.  But you continue on with your pretend tough guy cyber life.  Maybe it'll make up for some of the sadness you suffer in real life.

I'll pray for you.....

Because I'm a terrible person, and a moron, I will continue to not dissappoint and have decided that you yourself can be in the same vehicle kind sir. Have a great day :)

Actually I took it easy on you.  Only a complete loser would ever wish death upon another person over something that happened in sports.

The fact you and others believe that Stern actually had a choice makes you dumber then a door knob.   There are rules that are negotiated between the union and the league.  Stern can't just make them up as he goes along even if he wanted to.   Stern has to abide by the rules of the CBA, end of story.

Your comment about the lockout if it's possible was even more stupid.  You think Stern locked out the players?  Idiot.  Stern can't lock out anybody, the owners did.  And rightly so, why wouldn't they negotiate the best deal they can get?  They take ALL the risk, yet the players are the only people guaranteed to profit every year.  You obviously don't understand how things work in the business world and probably never will.

Kobe raped someone? I must have missed that. I mean cause you couldnt be talking about the woman in Colorado. Because if you were talking about that then it wouldnt make any sense because he wasen't charged with anything, because they found 3 OTHER MENS DNA. And if you seriously think that a woman that has slept with 3 different men in a few days really was raped by one of the most famous people on earth you might be a little ignorant.

Yeah, ok stupid.  He wasn't charged criminally because it takes a ton of evidence to prove somebody guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and with Kobe's unlimited funds and resources that wouldn't happen.  But he did get charged in civil court..

And oh yeah, he settled out of court.  He paid the Colorado woman out of pocket.... why does an innocent person do that?

I know if I was accused of rape I wouldn't be so quick to pay off the girl accusing me and apologize publicly on national tv for everything the girl went through.  Would you honestly do that?

Wow anything for money. The BS lockout and now a fine by the league because he wasn't at all-star events. He played in the game that means nothing and took a hard foul from a crybaby Wade who was getting beat time and time again by a superior older player, yet Kobe never retalliated and remained classy about it. Now Stern and his idiots that run the league are fining him for this really!!!!! Stern can die in a car wreck that would be a blessing for the NBA we have no room on this planet for this idiot who just cares about how full his pocket book is in his purse, anything to keep it full. Kobe has better things to do such as stay focused for the games that matter and his team, not this exhibition of garbage where nobody tries to win and don't take seriously. Really Mr. Stern really!?!?!?

I'm pretty sure you need to relax a little bit.  Stern doesn't make up the rules as he goes along like you think he does, the player's union agreed to their rules in every CBA they have signed.  If the players had a problem with the demands made of them on all star weekend or anywhere else, then fight that when it's time to negotiate.

The fact you hope Stern dies in a car crash tells us more then we need to know about the type of person you are.  There isn't one good person on the planet that could even type something like that in anger or a joke, it's impossible for any reasonable or good person to do.

To wish a tragic and early death upon a person and the suffering that goes along with something like that for his family over a decision he made to fine a guy that grosses 50 million dollars per year playing basketball and with his endorsements is just idiotic.   Only a real moron talks like that and apparently you're exactly that.

A moron.
