Report: Howard has asked Magic to get Steve Nash

Would acquiring Steve Nash make Dwight Howard a happy man in Orlando? (Getty Images)

The Suns may want to re-sign Steve Nash, but that doesn't mean the trade rumors are going to go away. And it also doesn't mean they're not going to answer the phone when someone calls about him.

There's already the rumor of Lamar Odom being talked about for Nash, but here's one with some larger implications: Nash to the Magic. Via HoopsWorld:
The Orlando Magic has made offers for Nash in the past and sources close to the situation say that they’ll attempt to acquire the 16-year veteran in the next two weeks. Dwight Howard has asked the front office to pursue Nash and sources close to Howard believe he won’t exercise his early termination option if the team is able to acquire Nash and re-sign him this summer.
That... would be interesting. And it makes a decent amount of sense. Something a lot of us aren't thinking about is that Howard's not technically a free agent this summer. He just had the option to terminate his contract early and become one. So if the Magic were doing good things or he felt like he wanted to give them more time, he could just stick around and make us all go through this again in 2013.

Bringing in Nash would certainly make him reconsider though. You're talking a Hall of Fame point guard to pair with the best big man in basketball. That's a pretty good combination. The Magic would almost certainly have to take on some money in this deal as the Suns aren't going to let Nash go for nothing. But GM Otis Smith has shown a willingness in the past to mix things up in an effort to win, so I'm sure every single player on the roster would be available, except Howard.

As we near closer to the March 15 deadline, I think you'll see one of two things happen with Orlando. A) They trade Howard or B) they keep him and make an aggressive trade to try and win this year, while also convincing him to stick around later.

Nash has refused to ask for a trade from the Suns, but this deal would be good for him as he tries to compete for a title in the twilight of his career. The Suns aren't going anywhere anytime soon, so pairing Nash with Howard would at least give the Magic a relative shot. Would they be able to beat the Heat or Bulls in a series? It would be tough. But it's not just about this year, but the bigger picture. And if Howard wants Nash and Smith delivers, that could go a long ways to keeping No. 12 in Orlando.

It would be cool is Nash went to Orlando.  He is also a FA after the season.  For salary cap purposes a fair deal could be Nash, Robin Lopez, and Telfair for Jameer Nelson, Ryan Anderson, and Chris Duhon.

Even better idea for Orlando to make a run in the East - Get Nash and Grant Hill..for it to work salary cap wise - you would have to include Nash, Grant Hill, Telfair, and Hakeem Warrick for Jameer Nelson, Duhon, Ryan Anderson, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, and Q-Rich who could than be bought out by Phoenix to re-sign with Orlando.

Davis and Orlando don't look to be a good match anyways, Phoenix might as well let Grant go with Nash to try and win a title.

Suns aren't going anywhere anyways - Ryan Anderson can play the 4 with Gortat @ C, good young frontcourt to build around with Davis, Morris, Channing Frye, and Robin Lopez to back up off bench. You got Childro or Dudley @ the 3, Jameer at PG with Duhon backing up. Shannon Brown and Mike Redd at the SG.

Orlando would have Howard @ C, Earl Clark or Hakim Warrick @ PF, Turkolu or Grant Hill @ SF, SG is J-Rich with Reddick and Wafer backing up.  PG is Nash with Telfair backing up. Magic would need backup Center and more depth @ the 4.

Not sure if it would be enough but it would help.

For depth purposes, the trade without acquiring Grant Hill may make more sense.

Go ATL Hawks! Wish we could package Marvin Williams and Joe Johnson together to get a scorer.

Report: Howard has asked Magic to get Steve Nash

Being a Magic fan I can read the writing on the wall. Get Steve Nash (how old is he? 35 or 40?) buying gutting Howard's support staff, only to have Howard bolt for the lights of LA at the end of the season. I say swap him now while you have a chance for anything. If he isn't willing to let his "yes" be "yes" then you can't trust him.

As a Magic fan, I would be excited to see that move happen.  Whereas I do love Jameer's attitude and his heart (he plays hard almost every night), he is what he is and that is a slightly above average PG offensively and a below average PG defensively.  It certainly is not for lack of effort.  There are certain things that just are not in Jameer's skill set.  Such as dribble penetrating and finishing at the rim on a consistent basis or dribb;e penetrating and finding the open passing lane on a consistent basis without having to dribble out or without having to skirt the baseline and jump out of bounds to make the pass.  On the defensive end, he really struggles to keep up with opposing PGs and keeping his body in between the ball handler and the basket.  Therefore, he plays off of the opposing PG and thereofre can not shorten the angles of the passing lanes.  Furthermore, when the PG is taller than he is (most of them), they have an easy time shooting over him due to the fact of giving the ball handler so much space.

Again, it's not that he doesn't play hard or doesn't have a lot of heart, but, at least on the offensive side of the ball, this scenario would certainly make for a better Magic team.

How much gas does Howard think Nash has left in his tank? The man 38 or 39, he's on his way out of the league, if Howard is planning on staying with Orlando, he needs to think future. I believe the is just buying time, he wants out of Orlando, this is just to stop the fans from worring about him leaving, if they hear Dwight is asking for more help in Orlando they will think he's staying, but it's all a front.

As much as i would love to have nash on the magic squad...i dont think that will change the end season outcome.  Howard is going to leave. I held onto hope that they would make a championship run and that would persuade him to not terminate his contract.  The team plays uninspired at many times in games and has no chance to win it all.  Unless the magic can get a boat load of draft picks in trade they should just let him go.  No need to trade for a bunch of nothing...

I think the Magic would be contenders if they signed Steve Nash.  It's not about bringing in as much talent as possible, it's about bringing in the right talent.  I think that Steve Nash is a guy who makes everyone better.  No doubt he'll make Dwight Howard even better, but the other players will also improve.  He's the right guy to bring in.  I think that would be a great fit and would like to see how that team measures up.

Nash brings a lot no doubt, but still the Magic would still need one more formidable player.  Maybe they could get Kobe.  He wants his last title or two and is watching the Lakers organization melt down in front of his eyes as the Buss kids try to fill Dr. Jerry's shoes and fail miserably.  However, Nash to Lakers to team with Kobe, Gasol and Bynum is more inviting, and that combo more likely to go the distance.
