It's no secret that this year's dunk contest field is a bit lackluster. That's not to say it won't be good, but when the four names were announced -- Derrick Williams, Chase Budinger, Paul George and Iman Shumpert -- there wasn't exactly a big buzz about it.

But with Shumpert suffering from a little patellar tendinitis, and won't be participating in the dunk contest after all. His replacement? Jeremy Evans of the Utah Jazz. Evans opened a Twitter account Tuesday night and tweeted, "Hey everybody! I'm brand new to twitter and hopefully will have a big announcement about All Star Weekend soon," along with a video of him dunking. Assuming that's legit, combined with a report saying Evans was in and the fact the Jazz has a video on their website announcing it. So yeah, Evans is in.

Evans had some serious buzz prior to the announcement of the field with a Twitter campaign called "JeremyEvansDunk" and a bunch of other support from bloggers and media types. He was a bit of a snub originally, so he's a worthy replacement.

With no Shumpert though, that also means no Jeremy Lin helping out, which seemed to be the contest's big selling point. Don't sleep on Evans though. Watch this dunk and tell me he isn't going to impress.

Jeremy Evans replacing Shumpert in dunk contest

The dunk contest is getting ridiculous these are Pro Basketball players not acrobats. We have seen every dunk imaginable now we expect more. That is why alot of the big named stars refuse to do it anymore. You can really hurt your season if your playoff bound. And all for what a stupid dunk contest that dosent even show how great of a player you are. Only how much hang time you have and how high you can jump. Look at Nate Robinson he has won it multipe times, but look how many teams he has been on during his time in the NBA. Dunk contest means nothing to the true NBA fan. I'm all for keeping it just for fun. But I'm not expecting anything new. Nor will I be amazed at how high someone can jump.

Jeremy Evans replacing Shumpert in dunk contest

The NBA dunk contest has rarely gone to the best dunker. It is fixed from the beginning. The judges pay no attention to difficulty and creativeness to pick the best. They simply pick the most popular player. Some contest! Dwight Howard was not better than Rudy Fernandez. Rudy's dunk was way too hard. Get excited for this year? Just pick the shortest player - woops! That won't work this year since all are 6-7 to 6-9. Maybe there will be a contest. We will have to tune in to see what these guys can bring. A special dunk can get the crowd to pick. Jeremy is worthy of being an addition to this group.

Jeremy Evans replacing Shumpert in dunk contest

Who knows maybe having some of the lesser knowns from the NBA might actually make it worth watching again, might actually make it a competition again. I am probably getting way ahead of myself, but one can dream right.

What is this?  A video of him back at his Division 2 college dunking on a kid that is 5' 6" at best that plays on the JV team?

Jeremy Evans replacing Shumpert in dunk contest

The NBA dunk contest has really gone downhill over the years, this used to be an event that all the big guys wanted to be in...certainly not the same anymore.  As for this year, I will say that I am happy that Shumpert will be replaced.  It is not that I don't want him to be in it but the thing that bothered me was that Jeremy Lin was going to assist him in the the contest.  Everyone loves the story of Lin, and I think that would have been the problem...Since it is based off of fan vote i think Shumpert would have won the contest even if the others involved outperformed him in it.

Lebron should enter it, he'd probably win it this year.

Jeremy Evans replacing Shumpert in dunk contest?

The dunk contest has been lacklustre because of moronic judging. No offense to Dwight Howard, but his contest dunks have always been underwhelming, but he usually makes it to the finals, knocking out a better dunker in the process. I'm kind of surprised Rudy Gay isn't in this year, but I'm not disappointed with these selections. Hopefully, it's a good one.
