Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball toss
Chucking the basketball at the chest of an NBA referee while angrily disputing a call: It's one of those things that you just can't do without hearing from the NBA league office.
Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was ejected from a Sunday night game against the Pistons in Detroit for throwing the basketball at referee Sean Wright after he did not receive a foul call on a drive to the basket. The ejection -- prompted by two back-to-back technical fouls -- came in the third quarter of a 96-81 loss to the Pistons.
The NBA announced on Monday that Rondo would be suspended for two games without pay for "throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest."
Rondo will serve his suspension during road games against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. He will be available again after the All-Star break, during a Feb. 28 game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.
The no-call that incensed Rondo involved a hard drive into the middle of Detroit's defense that ended with Pistons center Greg Monroe contacting Rondo as he fell. Monroe's knee and leg hit a falling Rondo as he attempted to contest Rondo's shot. Contact was clearly made and Rondo lay on the ground after absording the blow, but no foul was assessed.
CSNNE.com reports that the ejection is "under review" by the league office.
In March 2011, Phoenix Suns point guard Aaron Brooks was suspended one game for throwing the ball at an official. In January 2012, Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors was fined $25,000 but not issued a suspension after being ejected for throwing the ball towards the opponent's bench.

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball tossReal wise decision, Rajon. If you thought you weren't getting the benefit of the calls before, wait and see what happens when you come back from the suspension.

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball tossFor all the clowns saying "suspend the refs" when they make a mistake, I totally agree. Right after they suspend players for every mistake they make. Miss a free throw, suspension. Miss an open jumper, suspension. Throw the ball away? Suspension. Travel? Suspension. Get a tech? Suspension. Mismanage the clock? Suspension? Rondo was having a crappy game, with 6 turnovers and 1 for six shooting. That should be at least a six game suspension for bad play.
Makes as much sense as suspending a ref for making a mistake. |

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball tossRondo's a little beech. So someone missed a foul call. He obviously knew that there was no way the referee could catch the ball with one hand extended above his head and the other on his whistle, and he know he would hit him with the ball. Did it leave a Spalding mark? Of course not. Was it intentional, and a flagrantly disrespectly and intentional act? Absolutely. Two games is good. If it HAD been hard, he'd be looking at a lot more.

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball tossI agree that he did not toss the ball that hard toward the ref. But the fact remains that the ref obviously did not have his hands out and was not expecting the ball from Rondo. So in this case, Rondo did throw the ball at the ref and should have been disciplined. Did it deserve a 2 game suspension? I don't know....but discipline of some sort was in order. |

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball tossWow just saw the replay. I didnot realize having a guy land on you was not a foul. And the so called ball toss. My two year throws harder then Rondo tossed that at him. What a joke the NBA has come. Ref should have apologized for being such a crappy ref.

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball tossI cant stand Rondo at all. Having said that this is the exact reason why i dont watch this garbagetruckjuice of a sport. WHAT A JOKE! He underhanded (one handed mind you) TOSSED the ball back to the "ref". David Stern is a joke the NBA is a joke and this is why i dont watch. What is really tragic for me is that i played b ball all through school and i coach and love the game with all my heart. I think one of the biggest problems (imho) about the NBA is the relationship between player and ref. No other sport (soccer maybe) do the players constantly go OFF on the official over pedestrian everday calls. Just watch a Heat game and every time one of the BIG 3 gets a foul called on them or one missed they jaw at the ref like he stole their moms virtue. I choose to look away. |

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball tossI don't know why everyone is complaining about the bad refs of todays NBA, I've been watching pro basketball since the 60's and the refs have ALWAYS been lousy. I don't think I've EVER seen a game officiated properly (either way), maybe the poor refs are supposed to be a distraction so no one notices all the traveling, palming of the ball, doble-dribbling, etc. |
