Update 12:22 p.m. Monday, February 6th: The league announced Monday that Kevin Love has been suspended two games for the whole "stepping on Scola's face" thing. Scola handled the whole thing pretty well.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love is a surefire All-Star this season and one of the most promising young players in the NBA. But he'll catch some Heat for what went down during a Saturday night game against the Houston Rockets. There may very well be some people who watch the video below and deem it "dirty."

The incident began with the Rockets holding possession of the ball, trailing the Timberwolves leading, 64-52, with a little less than nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. Scola was working on Love with his back to the basket in the post. Scola fell to the ground in the paint after Love swiped down hard on the ball to force a turnover and Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio collected the ball and passed ahead to start a fast break the other direction. Love then moved to join the play as Scola lay on his back in the paint, in between Love and the upcourt action. Love seemed at first to attempt to step over Scola but his left foot wound up coming down with full force on Scola's face. Replays seemed to indicate that Love was looking down at Scola prior to stepping his foot down.

No foul was called on the play. The only question now is whether the act will draw the attention of the NBA league office.

This isn't the first recent incident between the two big men. Less than a week ago, Scola threw the ball at Love's male region while attempting to save the ball from going out of bounds. Love doubled over in pain at the force of the throw and lay on the ground motionless while Scola checked on his well-being.

Clothsline was Danny Granger's quote. I agree it wasn't a classic clothsline, but it was intentional and should have been a flagrant foul.

That was weak and unintentional. Nothing happens.

That must be why Love said the suspension was warranted.  Warranted, as in, you know, deserved?

The guy who said Love "clotheslined" Danny Granger though has never actually seen a clothesline.  Grabbing a guy's shoulder from behind is not a clothesline.  Time for someone to go back and watch the original "The Longest Yard".

Kevin Love suspended for stepping on Scola's face

I've been a Kevin Love fan since he was in high school, so when I heard about this, I thought, "naaaah".  Then when I saw the first replay I thought the same thing.  I've had my leg caught up before and from the first angle it looked like he was just trying to get it loose.  But the second replay is more telling.  If you've ever been in this situation your natural instinct is to keep hopping forward on the other leg and pulling your caught leg up and out.  Unfortunately, it completely looks like Love intentionally stepped on Scola's chest.

To another poster who said Scola was trying to trip Love.....that's just dumb.  He put his hands up to protect his face, and is lucky he did it.

Love was pissed off that no foul was called on the other end and you could see was still playing with anger.  No problem with that, but I can't see any way this wasn't intentional and the suspension appropriate.

To the other poster who said if Love were in a big market he'd be considered a top 5 player......Uh, no.  Love his game, but not a top 5 guy by any stretch of the imagination.

Kevin Love suspended for stepping on Scola's face

Just two games earlier, Love clothslined Danny Granger, almost starting a fight, and didn't even get called for a flagrant foul. After the game he complained about Indiana's physical play. It seems that one of the most physical players in the league doesn't like it when someone plays physical against him. He's a great player, but gets too many points from flopping and flailing.

I've seen several angles of the Scola play now, and while maybe Scola deserved it, I believe Love intentionally stepped on Scola. Love deserves the suspension, and his press release is total bs. (What a shock)

Love has now moved up to #1 on my list of dirtiest players in the NBA.

i don't think there was malicious intent at all. it was an accident. Let it go. Both plays between these guys were accidents. NBA announcers are the only reason Love got suspended because they blew it so far out of proportion. Shut the hell up look at it unbiased. It's not like he looked down spotted his face and aimed it like a curb stomp guys. Completely accidental. Pathetic suspension.

I agree with many posters saying this was accidental. What I saw is that Scola was fouled HARD and for some reason there was a no-call.  Scola was on the ground underneath Love.  When Love tried to run the other way, the only way to do this is to step over him.  When this happened, Scola put both arms up and tried to trip Kevin.  You can see this in the replay that he actually stopped his leg.  The foot landed ON THE CHEST area.  Love then inadvertantly kicked him in the chin as he tried to move the other way.  I see this a million times in the replay. I am sorry.  I dont see anything malicious or dirty there.

This is normal for Rockets players.  Chase Buddinger got his face stepped on in college by a University of Houston player
