There are about ten legitimately great point guards in this league, and a crop of upcoming ones. It's a stacked position. But behind point guards, the most often debated position in terms of relative greatness in the league right now is power forward. The West last year was so stacked LaMarcus Aldridge was snubbed from the All-Star game and it was simultaneously an outrage and completely understandable. So anyone claiming they are the best in the league is a bold statement. Coming from Kevin Love? That's chipotle-jalapeno-curry bold.

From ESPN Radio 1500 in Minneapolis:
Who's the best '4' in the league: you or Blake Griffin?

I believe I'm the best '4' in the league. I think you have to believe that you're the best. I think Muhammad Ali even said, 'I was the greatest before I knew I was.' I think everybody needs to have that mindset. That's part of winning the mind game from the very start. You have to believe it. You have to hold yourself accountable.
via Wolfson: Wolves will offer Kevin Love maximum, but will he take it? | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities – Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers).

Now, Kevin Love is the best rebounding power forward. He's the best perimeter shooting power forward. He's probably the most marketable power forward. But the best?

Love is much improved defensively this year under Rick Adelman so far, ranking in the upper half defensively according to Synergy Sports. But both his rotations and man defense suffer from inattention and a lack of physicality. His offensive post work leaves a lot to be desired in temrs of footwork and positioning. This isn't to say that Love's game has to be flawless or that it isn't great on its own, but it's a long way from complete.

Still, Love's right that the approach needs to be him saying he's the best. There's no upside to giving anyone else that title. It may be annoying that overconfidence is so pivotal for pro athletes but it is. For the rest of us, though, we may want to hang on for a bit, no matter how many 30-30 games he drops.

Nowitzki is the best '4' in the game hands down........and by a mile!!!!
It seems easy to compare Dirk and Love. They both have games based on great fundamentals, great shooting and an ability to exploit the mismatch nightmare they create. Dirk is 7'0", 245....Love is 6'10", 260.

But...their games are completely unique in their method of exploitation. Dirk has always been a great ball handler who could create more off the dribble and is more comfortable shooting off balance. He scores from everywhere.

While so does Love, it is a rarity to see him driving with the ball from 5 feet behind the line for a crossover, pull-up, fadeaway from 18. He is much more methodical and plain less visually appealing in his scoring. His style however puts him in the position he is in to snag 15 boards a game. He has something to do with it too though.

They are two different players. As for whoever talked about Dirk being clutch, I completely agree. However, Love hasn't ever had that opportunity. It is clear though that Love's numbers are right on pace where Dirk's were at the same point.

Love is the best rebounding #4 in the game. Dirk can create his own shot the best. Don't forget the most athletic and with most upside in Blake.

The NBA no longer is about SF, PF, C. Players are a #3,4,5. It has all to do with a player's style fitting an equation.

dex morgan's comment is idiotic. Love plays on a TEAM. And I take him first among fours in the league right now. Aldridge is half center....but he's right there. Nobody else is close except Griffin and z bo, and Blake as we are seeing this year, has a lot LOT LOT LOT to  learn (speaking of not rotating on defense). I think Zach Randolph is the other major name.....but beyond that, who is there? Randolph or love....thats the choice in my opinion.

Wait. Wait. Wait.

People really agree that Kevin Love is a better shooter than Dirk? Is this really happening right now or am I in the matrix. Love is a better rebounder, but that's where it stops. Like Chuck said once, "it's like he's shooting over a chair." If you have one possession to win the game, who you betting the rent money on? Dirk or Love?

All that is beside the point anyway. Love's comment was taken out of context for a story anyway.

At this moment, I would have to agree. He can do it all. The only thing is he's not the great athlete, with ridiculous hops ala Blake Griffin. With that said, I would definitely take him over Griffin, and any other young 4 in the game. He produces night in, and night out. It's about time he'g getting recognized for his talents. Wrap him up T-Wolves. You have a special player in Mr. Love!
