In a rare role reversal, the Lakers are playing bridesmaid to the Clippers this week in Los Angeles.

After decades of dominating in the headlines and the standings, the Lakers lost out on coveted All-Star point guard Chris Paul, who was finally traded by the New Orleans Hornets to the Clippers after multiple proposed deals with the Lakers were blocked by NBA commissioner David Stern.

Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant, who is used to being the center of the Southern California sports universe, isn't happy about it.

ESPNLA.com reports that Bryant blames other owners from around the NBA for keeping Paul out of his clutches.
"I think other owners did not want the Lakers to make significant improvements again," Bryant said after practice Thursday, hours before Paul's introductory news conference with the Los Angeles Clippers, less than five miles across town.

"We always contended as players that the lockout was really more so about the owners fighting amongst themselves, which is what you just saw [with the vetoed trade]," Bryant said. "You got Chris Paul coming here and the other owners weren't with that, because you don't want another great player coming to L.A., and all of the sudden Los Angeles has another player that can carry them on well after I retire. So, it's more about the owners bickering amongst themselves."
Bryant's bitterness is totally understandable. The entire Paul trade process went down under the sketchiest of circumstances. Stern winds up being a major loser because of the means and Bryant's Lakers lose because of the ends.

Life will move on, though, especially with the 2011-2012 season set to begin in just 10 days. The talk will quickly turn to which team is better: Lakers or Clippers? Assuming full health, the Lakers are still deeper and more talented but the Clippers are quickly going to be quick risers. Los Angeles is the Lakers' throne to lose, for now, but this role reversal could unfold even more dramatically over the next 6-9 months.

The owners and the fans are sick of The L.A. Lakers cheating their way into the the Finals every other year.  Now, The Lakers will be exposed, and their crappy fan-base will be exposed too.  I love it.....

Im sorry bro, and Im a sixers fan, but this is a naive comment.

Everyone wants to go back to the Gasol trade and make it look like the Lakers STOLE Gasol from Memphis. But lets keep in mind that the Lakers gave up the rights to Marc Gasol in that trade, as well as draft picks to the Grizzlies. Kwame brown only went to match up the salaries, and Crittenton at the time still was looked at as a young player with potential. And the Grizzlies needed cap relief and to dump Gasol's contract, so it was a win-win.

You cannot say the Lakers cheat, just because they agree to deals that benefit both teams. You know very well if your team's GM was pulling off these deals you would not be complaining.

how can anyone think the laker deal was better than the clips?  the hornets got younger talent, better draft picks, and saved money.  cry all you want laker fans, but this was a better deal for not only the hornets, but the league.  the league is better when all teams have a chance.  just ask the nfl.  sorry all you laker fans think you deserve a gasol trade whenever the team needs a shot in the arm.  let kobe find out what early playoff exits feel like.  maybe his ego will appreciate the early years.  you are not entitled to the finals, you earn them...

It all depends on how you are evaluating the trade. In the short term, there is no question that the Lakers Deal made the Hornets better. They got a 20+ PPG scorer in Kevin Martin. They got a Veteran in Luis Scola who averaged about 18 and 10 last year, they got Lamar Odom, who was the sixth man of the year last year and could start on most teams, and they got Goran Dradgic (I think thats how u spell it) who is a very good back up PG. Plus, Houstons 1st round pick.

In the Clippers Deal, they got a better potential future package. They got Eric Gordon, one of the league's better young players, they got Kaman, who is an expiring contract, and still a serviceable player, They also got Al-Firoque (I think thats how u spell it) who has upside and was a first round pick last year. And the most important piece was the unprotected first round (which will most likely be a top 5 pick)

So to say that the Lakers deal was not better is not completely true. It just depends on if you are looking for short term or long term. The league should not have overturned the Lakers deal, and it sent a bad message about the NBA, but at the same time, I think the Clippers deal will end up being better for the Hornets.

Over the years the Lakers have been afforded players such as Wilt, Kareem, Shaq AND Kobe.  Their arrogant sense of entitlement simply took a hit here in the case of CP3. What's wrong with a little "NBA justice" to mirror our country's "social justice" being pushed by the White House?  It is curious that most of media (when it comes to the NBA) seem to want all the stars on 4 or 5 teams.  Why isn't "parity" welcomed in the NBA?

New Orleans clealy got the better end of this deal.  The Clippers had a bona fide outside shooter in Eric Gordon, a serviceable backup in Kaman and Minnesota's #1 pick in the next draft!  I would argue that with Jordan and Griffin, along with Billups at the point that would have been enough with Gordon to have been good.  Kudos to Dell Demps for having the patience to pull off this deal.

why doesn't this crap happen in the nfl.  how about getting rid of the guaranteed contract.  if you don't play well, you get cut.  this is the reason i like golf.  david duval would have be a great player, but he lost it.  nobody is suffering for this other than him.  PAY FOR PLAY!!!!!!!!

I don't care who the Clippers get. The Clippers will always be the Clippers.
