A lengthy courtship has come to fruition.

SI.com reports and Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms that unrestricted free agent guard Jamal Crawford has chosen to sign a 2-year contract worth $10 million with the Portland Trail Blazers. The second year of the deal will be on a player's option.

Crawford posted a Twitter mesage shortly thereafter: "rip City!!!"

To legally make that offer, Portland must move below the luxury tax line so that they are able to re-acquire their full Mid-Level Exception. That could come via a massive salary dump in a trade or by using the amnesty clause on guard Brandon Roy, who recently announced his decision to pursue a medical retirement because of multiple knee injuries.

Back in November, Crawford told CBSSports.com that the interest between himself and the Blazers was mutual. Members of the Blazers, including franchise forward LaMarcus Aldridge, had been aggressively recruiting Crawford, a Seattle native, to add depth to Portland's backcourt, which took a hit with the loss of Roy a trade that sent backup guard Rudy Fernandez to the Dallas Mavericks on the night of the 2011 NBA Draft.

Crawford, 31, averaged 14.2 points and 3.2 assists for the Atlanta Hawks last season and was named the NBA's sixth man in 2010. The Hawks, after dishing out big dollar deals to guard Joe Johnson and big man Al Horford, and with forward Josh Smith on the books for big money already, opted not to offer Crawford an extension.

This explains how Portland was possibly going to be the third team in a trade for Howard. Wallace was a salary dump.

So many NBA moves are now more about everything BUT two teams trying to make a fair deal by sending equal packages between teams involved in a trade. It just makes it seem stupid: someone ends up with Howard for example because Portland wants to dump salary.

Blazers would still pay his salary if he used a medical retirement idiot. Now it's off the books totally, no reason to wait a year. And thats chump change for Allen!

I thought the Pacers offered the exact same deal to this guy? If I was a player, I think I would have went that route had it been on the table.

Its amazing how many people come on here and say Crawford isnt known for sharing the ball ? Isnt known by who because the players seem to love playing with him.

Also Crawford sure as heck got the Hawks out of teh first rd last year with his 20+ ppg off the bench in the first rd . 5 mil for even a chance of taht type pof performance in the playoffs is not a bad one year investment

I like Crawford but why oh why did they basically rent a player for a year and use the Amnesty on Roy. Allen must like giving money away. Kneeroy retired and would have come off the books next year with Allen basically off the hook. Now Allen gets to pay the majority of the remainder of his salary if not all of it as I don't think insurance will be kiccking in. Were the B;azers that desperate to make a move. Crawford won't get them out of the 1st round and will be gone come next season.

I think this addition to the Blazers is ill advised. Crawford doesn't play good defense, and is not known for sharing the ball. But worse is that the addition of Crawford will take away from the minutes needed for development of the Blazers young guards. I believe Matthews will continue to start, but Elliot Williams, Armon Johnson, and Nolan Smith all need floor time to grow their games.

The Blazers must feel that they still have a shot to compete for the championship (a view I don't hold) and want the veteran presence Crawford can bring. But Crawford has rarely been equated with winning teams. His 6th man of the year award had more to do with hot shooting than team play.

What the Blazers needed was a front court player, and all they got in that regard was the oldest player in the league, Kurt Thomas. I can't see either of those players putting the Blazers in a position to win it all.

Although the Blazers are focused on defense and Crawford plays little defense, this signing makes sense for both parties. With Brandon Roy retired the Blazers have few players who can get their own shot and most of those are rookies or second year men. Only Gerald Wallace among starters can do this. How do the Blazers counter the inevitable double teams that come at LaMarcus Aldridge? By pairing him with a good pick and roll and outside shooter guard. Crawford is among the best in hitting the three.

Maybe more important to the Blazers is depth and speed. Depth because Roy and Oden losses are huge gaps in the team. Speed because without Roy and Oden this is a very fast team. Wallace is a runner. Batum is a runner. Matthews is a runner. And even more importantly, Aldridge is the fastest big man in the league, often out ahead of the break. With Raymond Felton handling the point this year there will be lots of running and fast break. The thing the Blazers need is rebounding and they are not going to replace Oden's production but Camby is a good rebounder and defender so long as those no-longer-young legs hold out.

Will Crawford start? Rumor has it that he has been offered the starting two guard spot. That is an unlikely rumor because coach Nate McMillian has consistently shown he will start and play those who can best help the team win. Crawford, for his part, says he can continue being the sixth man and that is the role he is most suitable for - instant offense off the bench. In all a good get by the Blazers.
