Dwight Howard says he might stay in Orlando

Dwight Howard told media on Monday that he was still open to the possibility of staying in Orlando, if "changes" were made to improve the team. From the Orlando Sentinel
Said Howard, "As of right now, I have on a Magic uniform. Right? So I'm with nobody else, and that's the only thing that matters. And if it's meant for me to stay here, then I'll stay. And I love this city. There's no place I'd rather be but here in Orlando. And I just want to make sure that we have the right things here so we can win a championship.

"And I'm all about change. If you're willing to change and you're willing to do what it takes to win, then, you know, you've got me. And if you're not willing to do what it takes to win, I don't think anybody here would question anybody's motives if you want to stay in the same position you are."

ESPN.com reports that one of those changes is to bring in Chauncey Billups once he clears the amnesty waiver process. Because clearly, that's the kind of move that will put the Magic over the top. Howard has listed wanting input over the direction of the franchise as his biggest reason for wanting out. This despite his reticence at moves like trading Rashard Lewis and amnestying Gilbert Arenas. Essentially, Dwight Howard wants more control to run the franchise badly, which would only serve to make the team worse and drive him out of Orlando.

Meanwhile, the Nets are reportedly considering making an amnesty offer to Billups the same day. Their efforts to bring in Howard have been nothing if not consistent.

Howard's discussions of staying are a bit cruel, in a way. No one has believed Howard would stay in Orlando, not for two years. He's had every opportunity to say so and he's declined every time, instead leaning on the "I just want to win a title" talk which is code for "Don't blame me, blame the GM."

Now, by wanting Billups he's basically giving Jameer Nelson a vote of no confidence, if reports are accurate. That's the kind of thing that hurts chemistry, especially when Nelson has stuck up for Howard so many times. But this is all part of Howard and his management's plan to ease their way out. You say the things you can to put the onus on the team so when the time comes, people have somewhere else to drive their anger, which keeps the most public support you can. It's all part of the playbook, and Howard's filling it out nicely.

Dwight Howard says he might stay in Orlando

Orlando needs to avoid becoming Cleveland by demanding Howard sign an extension immediately.  In lieu of a true commitment, the Orlando Magic must begin leveraging a trade to get maximum value for DH.  NBA owners need to stop falling in love with these guys, clinging to the hope that they'll decide at the last minute to stay with the team.  Owners should be emotionally detached when making trade decisions and know when to cash in their chips to avoid losing out on talent.

Whatever, Dwight.  Make a few more free throws and develop some "go to" moves on the block.  A man of your size, strength, and potential should be able to carry a team.  But hey, if you see yourself as a role player...

Overrated. Howard still has no offensive game and is not clutch.

The Stranger-  "cry Broke?"  you CLEARLy know NOTHING about the MLB lol... when have you EVER heard the Yankees cry "broke?"  The Angels just signed a 3 billion dollar TV deal, they have the money to do it.... they arent a small market.  Small market teams like the Cavs w/ Dan Gilbert are the little babies that cry about everything because they dont have the team revenues to put there money on the line.

I agree with Dwight.  Orlando should do everything to improve the team.  After all, look at all the work he's put into improving his free throw shooting.

D12 is a whiney two-faced SOB who cant make up his mind because he doesnt have any balls left after the roids to take a stance and stick to it.

Otis should trade him on principle alone. Why risk him walking for nothing? It's too big of a risk for the franchise, and D12 isnt above the entire franchise.

Get all he can for him. Then hopefully Otis will get canned too.

I, personally, am so over these over-paid "atheletes" that just want, want, want. Listen NBA owners, you reap what you sow. If you are willing to pay a guy MILLIONS of dollars, and he goes somewhere else FOR MILLIONS MORE THAN THOSE MILLIONS ALREADY OFFERED, THAT'S YOUR OWN FAULT. Stop being crazy with offers. MLB just made their bed with a 250 MILLION dollar offer to Albert Pujols. Now, The owners THAT OFFERED THAT MONEY ARE GOING TO CRY BROKE! F Albert Pujols, F Dwight Howard, F Chris Paul. And especially, F LEBRON JAMES AND HIS DEMANDS.

Dwight Howard says he might stay in Orlando

hmmmmm...i have to admitt I must not know all the details.  But what exactly has Dwight Howard done wrong.  He has simply said, "i'm playing out the contact i signed, and then i choose to go somewhere else."   What is wrong with that?  Why would he want the Orlando Magic to trade him to a team, who would have to give up everything and then make them shitty....??  Why is that a good deal for him?

I know we all get attached to out hometown stars.  But they have rights too.  And if one chooses to play out thier contract, like Howard has, then that should be his right.
And hes only probably saying he wants to stay because to say anything otherwise would be press suicide.
