The Boston Celtics and the New Orleans Hornets are reportedly working on a trade, only it's not the one you think.

The Celtics and Hornets had recently been rumored to be engaged in a point guard swap of Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul but multiple sites reported on Friday night that the two teams were instead closing in on a sign-and-trade that would send All-Star forward David West to Boston.

NBA.com reported that the Celtics were "close to [a] deal to land West, who is a free agent. Yahoo Sports reported that the deal would include a 3-year extension worth between $27 and $29 million and would also see the Celtics send back center Jermaine O'Neal and "another player," who would then be re-routed by the Hornets.

Earlier Friday, the Celtics dealt big man Glenn Davis to the Orlando Magic for forward Brandon Bass.

West, 31, averaged 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season for the Hornets, the only NBA team he has played for during his 8-year NBA career. The 2-time All-Star tore his ACL back in March but decided to opt out anyway. He was declared healthy in October.

Now that the Lakers' deal for Chris Paul is dead, why not expand this deal to include Rondo and Green for Paul?

I thnk the best Celtics can hope for after all is done is 4th best  team.  Their stars are getting old. Rondo needs to keep his mind on basketball. He thinks he is so fast. Gonna beat Bolt in the hundred. Oh WOW. That kind of hubris makes him try to make plays he can't make , then go pout. Grow up. If Jerry West can ever forget how his dad treated him, he could make good decisions and help the lakers.

West is recovering from an ACL surgery, not back surgery but regardless, if he's healthy he will contribute on the offensive end.  And it won't hurt Rondo's assist average to have another guy with a good mid-range jump shot coming off the bench...if he's committed to the defensive scheme the Celtics run, the team has definitely taken a short bench and made it into a strength (Brandon Bass is a plus guy for the Celtics too)...now get an angry Chauncey Billups to come back up Rondo on the cheap...

The Celtics have a very small window to win another championship. Regardless of West's past back injuries, he's far superior to the injury risk that is O'Neal. He won't have to be a focal point offensively, and I think that helps save on the wear and tear of this accelerated upcoming season. I like this deal for Boston more than the potential Paul deal, because there was no way Chris Paul would have resigned with the Celts. Regardless of what happens with Paul and Howard, this season should be pretty exciting despite the work stoppage. Only 15 more days!!

New Orleans is not getting any younger by making this trade, and in fact is getting an aging player with injury issues

*SIGH*

the more you know.

1. West is 31 and has had back surgeries...back surgeries! anyone who is 6'9" and had back surgery is a HUGE injury question mark.
2. Go check the details of the contracts involved, I am pretty sure the Hornets WOULD be getting younger...you are looking at this for only this season, an extremely simple minded way of doing so

again, i do not agree with the league commish getting involved in the first place, however, get your facts striahgt

All things being equal, David Stern must void this deal according to the wording he used in nixing the three team trade. New Orleans is not getting any younger by making this trade, and in fact is getting an aging player with injury issues. David Stern has set himself up for much critisism if he allows this one to go through. And, simply must void it to give the appearance of fairness to the rest of the NBA. Otherwise, he's a hypocrit showing favoritism to the Celtics while doing otherwise to the Rockets and Lakers. You asked for this Stern. Now live with it. You can never do anything without such scrutiny after making such an egregious error in judgement by voiding the equitable three team trade previously.

Seriously, how are you going to get this deal done and not ok the CP3 deal? David West, a perennial All Star F for Jermaine O'Neal and "another player?" O'Neal hasn't been decent since his Indiana days about 5 years back, and basically took up a jersey in Boston. Talk about lopsided
big difference, West is a restricted Free agent...Paul is under contract.

I am not justifying the actions taken by the commisioner, but a restricted Free agent who just had back surgery and is 31 yeras old...is much different than the best point guard in the NBA who is under contract for one more season, and just now entering his prime.

The move was strictly to move dollars around...that is it...plain and simple. I don't think it is quite as lopsided as you do.

I dont think the NBA should have power to veto trades anyhow, if it falls under the correct guidelines in terms of contracts, let the free market work...teams that make bad decisions will not win, that simple.

for the Hornets, this West deal is perfect, take on expiring contracts and young players/draft picks...build for tomorrow, not today.

The sad thing is people are going to still attend in person and watch on TV this garbage sport. Whoever made the Washington General comment, brilliant!! Absolutely what it's become.

This is exactly why Stern should have just stayed out of the Lakers-Rockets-Hornets deal, which every (as in 100%) of "basketball" people said the deal actually favored the Hornets the most, Rockets second, and could help the Lakers, but that it would be a wait-and-see situation. Now there is nobody that can say West for O'Neal deal is even close to sane. Even taking O'Neal's best 2-year period statistically (2005-2006) wouldn't make this deal worthwhile for the Hornets - you know, basketball reasons and all. Heck, O'Neal has NEVER played a full season. And how would Rondo straight up for Paul have been workable since the previous one wasn't?
