Report: Paul won't sign extension with Celtics

By Matt Moore

And just like that, another swing in the momentum. As rumors of Rajon Rondo being traded from the Boston Celtics in their pursuit of acquiring Chris Paul hit a fever pitch, ESPN.com is reporting that Paul will not sign a long-term extension with the Celtics, which is supposed to shut off any further discussion of a trade.

Except that under the terms of the new CBA, this gets a bit more complicated. If Paul were to agree to an extend-and-trade with the Celtics, he would be limited to just a three-year extension, only two after his option year next year. That's a remarkably short contract for a player battling a knee issue looking for the big pay-off contract. If he were to be traded to Boston, he would have to wait six months to sign the full extension, which is only for four years. Conversely, if Paul were to enter free agency, whatever team he was playing for athe end of the season would have his Bird rights and could re-sign him to a five-year contract, the most he can get. Any other team, like, say, the New York Knicks (since their acquisition of him during the season is unlikely), would be able to sign him to a four-year deal. In short. signing an extension now makes zero sense.

But at the same time, we have a precedent set, and that precedent does not bode well for the Celtics. When Carmelo Anthony launched his covert (OK, it was louder than a C-130) plan to get to New York last year, the Nets were interested. And maintained interest. And kept pitching. But early on, reports surfaced that Anthony would not sign an extension with the Nets. They kept trying and trying, but Anthony maintained that the only team he'd sign an extension with was the Knicks. Eventually, that's where he was traded.

Now we have reports saying Paul wants to go to New York, and the Celtics trying to talk him into coming to Boston, including trying to acquire more assets to help a deal along. And now there's a report early on that Paul won't sign an extension there. Boston is, in no way, New Jersey, but the pattern is still alarmingly similar. Might be time for the Celtics to go back to their usual line of "We love Rondo, we'd never trade him," despite all indications to the contrary.

Report: Paul won't sign extension with Celtics

I think its obvious that CP3 wants to play with his friend Carmelo, with money not being an issue, we need to look at who's on the team that CP3 wants to go to, and the key name that keeps popping up is Carmelo Anthony, and Madison Square Garden.  The Knicks are a PG and a Center away from being a top seven (7) team.

is 35 and is on the down side a great career, he could help with the wear and tear on Chris Pauls body by providing that quality backup needed at PG.  The other side is Chauncey is a starting PG would he be willing to play behind CP3 or is CP3 willing to play behing Mr Big Shot.  Tough call but one I'm sure D'Antoni would not mind having.  In a shortened season this could work, if we are lucky enough to acquire Chris Paul, we need to commit major resources into finding a QUALITY Big Man and are both about 6'10"and seem great as backup Centers but I thnk we could use someone who can provide at least 10PPG and I'd be happy with 9REB maybe a or ask for a refund and bring back he would fit right in with his former teammate.  Go spend that money KNICKS we could be in the running in this shortened season.

I'm ok with being a loser, that's fine, but I still do not understand your issue with Ainge. But your a Laker fan so you don't expect you to understand. I was at half the games when the Celtics lost 21 in a row. I was at the game where the home crowd chanted MVP to Kobe Bryant. If Rondo is traded to a team where he has to be the guy you will see his moles. He is a 50 % ft shooter, without Ray and Paul the opposing def would just clog the inside. Rondo is overrated, he is not the franchise and that's the bottom line.

PMB19:  Speaking of swallowing loads...how is your mom doing?  You are a loser.  You better come stronger than that weakling.  Rondo is the franchise for that old team you have in Boston.  Let him go and the Celtics are a lottery team.

"Ainge blows it again" What are you talking about? The C's were terrible before Ainge came to town and since he has been here. The have 1 championship and came close to winning a 2nd. I'm so sick of you monday morning QB's who think you know so much. Rondo is not the franchise. If he did not have PP, Allen, and KG he would be exposed as an athletic PG with holes in his game. I hate WarnertoHolt, your the load that should have been swallowed.

Nice job Ainge...Paul won't sign an extension with the Celtics, so now you keep a bitter Rondo.  I am sure Rondo will want to sign an extension with Boston when his time is up.  Ainge blows it again.  Rondo will look great in purple and gold.

Report: Paul won't sign extension with Celtics

from the late 50's right through the 60's Boston was, along with most every major city and backwater town in the country was dealing with racism, to the likes I hope we never see again. Guys like Bill Russell, Sat sanders K.C. Jones DID NOT LIKE LIVING IN BOSTON. Nor did we like then living here. But your going back to a time where racial slurs where being throw down for the stands and from the White player themselves. weather it's no longer tolerated, excepted or believed that type of racism is gone completely from our society thou racism still has an ugly head in the game of life. As for current thoughts of Boston still being a racist town there's no longer evidence of that, in fact you'd have to go back 30 yrs. to the red Sox not having any colored players or the Celtics starting 5 white guys and winning a championship. But the Sox are plenty ethnic now and the Celtics start 5 Black players. I've lived in Boston for 49 yrs and was all of 8 yrs old by the summer of 1970 it was bad here but NO LONGER SO!!! Oh and now they love living here and so do I and most every Bostonian I know.
whom ever started this BS post this should finally rebutted your thoughts.

Report: Paul won't sign extension with Celtics

I AM REPOSTING THIS FOR THE THIRD TIME AS IT IS NOT POSTING OR HAS BEEN SCORED, SORRY IF IT SHOWS UP LATER 3 TIMES.

AES. So two blocks and a steal is nothing huh ? You are right if that were the case which it certainly is not. Hey AES are you forgetting Rondos 12 assists per game last year, or the eleven the year before ? How about all the 20+ assists games he has had, the way i figure is that amounts to 24 points a game for Rondo since most of his assists are wide open under the basket with a can't miss shot for whom ever receives it. Think about that and, while i am at it here if you think let alone say that Rajon Rondo can not play defense then that tells me you watch many Celtics games. Just plain and simple as that so you have no right to put that in print, do your home work first.  These comments in quotation are ridiculous ". the Celtics are a year away from being really, really bad.
2. Boston's well-known and well-deserved reputation as a racist town." Have you ever lived in Boston or even visited there? I doubt it, this is not 50 years ago when racism was running rampant across this great Country. This is the modern era and, things change if you have been to Boston lately  (or even visited) you would know that. So no don't get on here and make accusations that are unfounded. Boston welcomes black players and other ethnic groups as well. If they are great players they immortalize them naturally like any other fans and teams in professional sports. I think your problem is that you are racist and, that is your problem not anyone else's so i would look into my own heart if i were you and, you will see i am right. Incidentally i am from South Carolina and, things have changed immensely since the civil rights days 40 years ago. So you might want to look into joining the 21st century because i personally am getting sick of hearing how racist the south is as well. Think about it.

Report: Paul won't sign extension with Celtics

Chris Paul for Rajon Ronda hmmm.... not. Paul couldn't carry Rondo's jock strap. That would be such a lopsided  deal, uh for the other team sure not the Celtics. Rondo runs the team with such efficiency it is scary some times. OK maybe he is not one of the premier scorers in the NBA, so what he can dish out assists like a man possessed, he can play good defense and, he is the leader on the floor. I have been a die hard Celtics fan since i have been seven years old, that is almost fifty years. If they trade Rajon Rondo a fan i will be no more. The Celtics front office has a habit of letting excellent young and, talented players go. If this were to happen that would be the last straw for me as a Celtic fan. The front office needs to build around there talented young players not get rid of them but, that has been a pattern of late. Yes they done well in bringing Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo to the team. That was there last good move in a long time, now talking about trading off the best pure point guard in the league is madness. Nope the Celtics front office better back up and think again.
