Report: Italian club offers Kobe $600k per game

By Matt Moore

Turkish teams rushed into the fold. Then China started dabbling. Russia, Greece, the usual players have come to the table. Now Italy has its professional basketball teams charging the field to claim the crown jewel of lockout-available NBA players.

BolognaBasket.it reports that Virtus Bologna, which has been pursuing Manu Ginobili and who recently signed Chris Douglas-Roberts, has made an offer to Kobe Bryant for $800,000 per home game, or $600,000 net. Which is kind of a lot of money for anyone, even Kobe Bryant. Bryant has previously turned down offers from Besiktas in Turkey and has played the international game cool while repeatedly saying his options remain open. Virtus may be in a better position at most, however, given the fact that Bryant spent a considerable amount of his youth in Italy with his father playing professionally there.

Italy's season won't start until November, which means Bryant could take the offer knowing that the lockout is likely to drag on past the beginning of the year. Bryant could really use the rest on his body and doesn't need the money, obviously, but that's not how his mind works, by any and all accounts. He'll pursue playing basketball and beating opponents and making money, because that's what he does.

Can't expect a snake not to be a snake, now.

Let him leave.

It's a free country...relatively speaking, unless it's China...or unless you find yourself in one of several less forgiving, foreign jails.

Not sure how endorsements for U.S. players would equate there, or how players would be recieved by fans or maybe more importantly, by other players... possibly making worthy taking another look at those Turkish emergency medical facilites and Greek insurance policies.

Kobe is going to be fine, no matter where he plays, but lesser humans like Douglas-Roberts probably won't get the same benefits...and I doubt many/ANY U.S. players will be willing to trade what the NBA offers, for any other league, for very long.

The Country of Greece is going broke not the individuals, and  private companies. I do believe that Greece professional teams are private

It certainly is a private league and yes, these guys have more money then most people can even dream of having.   I'll give you an example of two brothers that own a greek basketball team.  Their combined worth is just over 3 BILLION dollars, they make insane money in their family shipping and steel business.  These brothers have an aunt who was named by Forbes as one of the worlds top 50 most powerful woman in the world.  The entire family is extremely wealthy and very powerful with connections world wide.  A few years back they publicly stated if Kobe or Lebron wanted to play in Greece they would happily pay either of them 100 million dollars for 2 complete seasons in the greek league.  Of course Kobe and Lebron have so much at  stake in North America and don't need to play overseas so neither deal went through but that should give you guys a pretty good idea of how much money some of these guys have over there.  The government was poorly run for decades, thus the deficit and severe issues they have financially as a country.  But as individuals there are a tremendous amount of wealthy people in Greece, and always will be.

Anyone notice Greece was still buying basketball players?  Is something wrong there.....they are going into default any day now!

The Country of Greece is going broke not the individuals, and  private companies. I do believe that Greece professional teams are private.  Are you that slow to separate a private entity than a private. I understand though your frustration about 600K. But in real economic teams, as along as the company is generating enough revenue, and the player bring in cash. I personally dont see nothing wrong with. I think, if you worked for a company and brought in a ridicolous amount of money to the company, you will feel that you are obligated to be paid as such.

Another penny for your thought: A 80,000 capacity stadium for football stadium. Assuming 20,000 parking spaces for $30, that is $600,000. An average ticket $85 for 80,000= that is $6.8 mil a game. Food and drinks average $20 = $1.6mil. In this simple scenario we have the team generating $9mil...that is just the low end. assuming the high end will be $15mil plus TV revenue. Name me a business in America today that can generate $9mil in a 3hr period?

This is why the professional athletes are paid ridicolous.

I'm sorry but in the world we live in and right now it looks pretty dire, with countries going broke, people living on the street and the first time in history where our children will NOT do better than their parents did.....people can still pay $600K to a person for one FREAKING BASKETBALL GAME.   I'm telling you the stars are definitely out of alignment.

Do it. The NBA, NFL, NCAA, MLB have all become annoying entities. I hope they all collapse.

Plus, the chicks over there are ultra wild and the clubs are outstanding.  Kobe will be scoring on and off the court with all that money.

I'm sure that married or not, Kobe will be raping I mean sleeping with plenty of woman.

Oops, my bad, he didn't get convicted of raping anybody.  He settled out of court and paid her off because he's a nice guy that didn't want to embarass her in court.

What a sweetie !!!

WTH are you talking about??!  Chump change??!  $600k per game is anything but chump change...  Not sure how many games they play in Italian leagues, but even 41, half the NBA, is more than $24 million!!!  I think you aren't paying attention and imagine the article says $600k for THE SEASON...  C'mon, wake up & smell the coffee before posting that tripe.

First off why would this idiot below me wonder why he tries to be like Mike.  Well he grew up watching him, tried to play and be like him, what part don't you get here.  As far as him playing for 6 extra large is insane.  He can make more back home signing autographs.  He's not going to risk his last few years playing for chump change.
