The Kings managed to take on John Salmons' salary for an aging player while giving up a veteran point guard on a reasonable deal and in return moved down three spots in the draft. They then used that pick to select Jimmer Fredette. Popular? Sure. Exciting? Absolutely. Bit of a reach? Totally. Fredette was going to go in the top-10 based on hype, not on translatable talent. There are concerns about his ability to translate to a point guard, and to defend bigger players. The latter concern is covered in Sacramento because Tyreke Evans is big enough to guard a moving house, but the Kings still need a distributor point guard and instead they have four ball-handling, scoring guards (Jimmer, Reke, Marcus Thornton, and John Salmons they traded for Thursday). And apparently, the Kings coaching staff was aware of that fact, and as a result, there was a rift over the pick. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reported before the pick went in that ownership wanted Jimmer, the coaching staff wanted Alec Burks. From Yahoo! Sports: 
The Sacramento coaching staff isnt happy with the selection of Fredette, sources say. They wanted a veteran guard, ala Felton or Parker.

Ownership getting entangled in basketball decisions is almost never a good idea. Mark Cuban's highly involved, but he asks for what his trusted people's recommendations are and for the most part lets Donnie Nelson do his job. Interfering like this creates situations where you have to have a cagematch before each game to decide which one of your four guards is going to get 25 shots per game. But it will help ticket sales in Sacramento, so maybe that's the Maloof's plan, even if they don't want to keep the team in Sacramento.

All in all, a weird day in Kings-land that resulted in Jimmer Fredette winding up in a strange spot for his talents.

your frikin stupid!!! steve nash is one of the best point guards to play the game of basketball just because he dosent have a championship dosent mean he is not a good player he is better than you will ever be so keep your retarded coments to yourself!

The point being Steve Nash was not the best player in the league either year.  He didn't deserve to be the MVP once let alone twice.  He's one of the worst MVPs ever and certainly the worst two time MVP ever.

What exactly did the Maloof family offer you so you could spell out how great the Jimmer pick was? Tell me rvparked! Was it 2 nights @ the Palms, a case of Coors, 2 court-side seats for a Kings vs. Hawks contest, or simply an autographed Jimmer jersey? It's quite ironic that you mention the words "management" and "shenanigans" in the same sentence. As they say though; out of the mouths of babes come some truth. Enjoy that final year of NBA in Sac-town, because it's leaving and won't be coming back. If the goofball Maloof family can lose a beer distributorship and find a way to blow a successful casino, I have no doubt they can take down a once-popular basketball franchise.

Slow your roll, Sacramento fans

Seriously folks. Take a breath and let Petrie make a few moves before we pull the eject handle.  The first and most important news is that we off-loaded an overpaid point guard with no improvement on the horizon. Udrih was done the day he got his first paycheck on a guaranteed contract. Typical athlete we get so frustrated with... play outa your mind till you get paid, then coast.  Salmons, at least often enough for me, still runs the court like a man possessed, hungry to win to the point of insanity. Odds are, he gets traded to a team that can use him for the short term championship run anyway (Chicago again? OKC? Miami?) and we free up even more guaranteed $$ for the guy Petrie really wants.  Also, the rights to sign Jimmer are just as tradable as any player already on the books, and frankly, I'm not sure I see management being willing to let any kind of shenanigans go on when it comes to an initial contract for this coin flip of a draft pick.  Save this little blurb and read it again come October.  I'll bet Fredette finds his way back to Utah yet.  If not? I don't care either way. He seems like a good kid, and maybe he'll bring the kind of excitement to SacTown as J-will did a decade or so back. Go Kings! (Was that a band wagon I just jumped on?)

Hey montshot11; don't be so rough on the Maloofs. They're just going through some rough times right now; that's all. Who else could be so sharp as to have to sell the massive beer distributor control of Coors in New Mexico to finance their ridiculous lifestyle? Having beer control there is akin to being an NFL owner; that is, it's not a matter of making money, it's how much will you make! Tell me what other family could possibly accomplish driving one of Vegas' favorite resorts into the Nevada desert. It's widely acknowledged that the bros are uncanny in their basketball IQ throughout NBA circles and this Jimmer publicity stunt will bail their butts out. Besides, I'll bet 90% of CBS Sportsline viewers even know who the Kings coaches are.
