Heat partied with Mavericks after Game 6?

See, when people question their will to win? This is what they're talking about.

Reports surfaced Monday on 790 The Ticket in Miami that some Heat players joined the Mavericks on Sunday night while the new NBA champs partied on South Beach (photos!) after their Game 6 win. One trusted member of Mavs media confirmed that Erick Dampier was one of the Miami members in attendance, along with unnamed others.

Just so we're clear on this. The Mavs trash-talked you all series long, dashed your title hopes, put even more criticism on your squad, celebrated on your floor and then in your city, and you go party with them? Nice chemistry guys. A few assorted thoughts:

  • The Big Three reportedly were not part of the celebration, but would it surprise you in the slightest if they were? Would that shock you in any way? If LeBron James had gone down there to party with JET, it would have been just more delight for the millions of people that took abject glee in the fall of the Heat and James in particular. It's a good thing they didn't head down there as far as we knew.
  • On the flip side of this, I tried explaining to people how much of this entire process is theatrics. Do the Mavs and Heat organizations like each other? No. Do Dirk and Wade get along? Probably not. But it's not personal, and all of these players consider themselves part of a brotherhood of players. Once the buzzer sounds, most of them are friends with one another. We like to think of these as blood rivalries like the one that existed with the Celtics and Lakers of the 80's but things aren't like that. Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant are buds, though they try and keep that one quiet for PR purposes. That said, KG would never celebrate with the team that defeated him.
  • How does one make that decision? "Well, I just lost the NBA Finals. What can I do? I guess I'll go out, since I live in Miami. Hmm. Maybe I should go drink and dance with the guys that just made me look like a group of slugs offensively and shut us down on our own floor. That sounds fun! Surely no one will see me!"
  • There likely won't be repercussions from this for Maimi, but there should be. Players that partake in that kind of behavior shouldn't be allowed to return to the team. Dampier is old enough to where he probably doesn't care, and after so many years in Dallas, you can understand him wanting to see his guys celebrate. But at the same time, one of the Heat's biggest issues this year was chemistry, and having guys who aren't fully committed to the organization is part of that.
  • It's an insult to Chris Bosh, who was emotionally wrecked after the loss. Say what you want about Bosh, he played his face off in the postseason and wanted to win badly. He cared.

You know that is pretty cool. You know you wanna have some fun instead of just "hating your guts"when you are playing at the court. You know that is just amazing how they can play and then be friends after they won.Right?I just think that is just DROP DEAD COOL!"how they can do that.

i'm so sick of people using rings to compare greatness.  if that's the case, then robert horry is the 4th best basketball player ever.  it takes a team to win it all.  stop saying someone isn't a good player because they have no rings.

The game is over. The series is over. The season is over. Get over it. They are free to do what they please.

Who cares? Dampier used to play for the mavs and will not be back next year any way. I bet the other 3 didn't see the floor for the heat at all and wont be back next year. Just more drama for ya mama from the media. Season's over guys. Deal with it.  Write about the NFL or something.

Heat partied with Mavericks after Game 6?

You want to know what's hilarious about this?  The head guy in the Miami front office, one Pat Riley, is as OLD-SCHOOL as it gets when it comes to player fraternization and ettiquete towards opponents.  I'd love to be a fly on the wall of his office when he hears (or heard) about this.  Probably one of the main reasons (along with age) that Mr. Riley did not take over for Spoelstra this season - he as much as anyone recognizes that the league culture has changed significantly from his Lakers and Knicks days.

In this day of free agency and fluid player movement, players just don't buy into the rivalries and leave the competitive spirit solely on the court.  There are no more qualms about hanging with opposing players immediately before or after games, as the guy you're playing may end up being a teammate or ex-teammate in the near future.

That much being said, this is still ridiculous. Miami just lost the Finals, something every player in the league (and outside the league too damnit) dreams of playing and winning.  The Heat's season ends on the most sour of notes, and THAT SAME NIGHT, Heat players are partying with the team they just played???  Are you kidding me?  Where's the passion?  Where's the fire?  Where's the vow to take things seriously and reaffirm a committment to improve for next season?  Jeez at least take a night or a week before you start bar-hopping like a mofo.  It's called heart, people.

Heat partied with Mavericks after Game 6?

Should all the Heat player's hibernate for the summer? Cease to live another moment because they finished 2nd best this season? I think not, millions of dollars in your pocket and a great party city(Miami) make it ridiculously easy to forget the aches and pains of being runner-up.

Didn't Dampier play with Dirk and Jet when they lost to the Heat in '06?  I'm not saying the Heat should be partying with the MAVS but it would make sense that Dirk and Terry said, "Eric, we blew it together 5 years ago.  You're like family, can you come hang out for awhile?"
