NBA Finals: Heat shift blame on Dirk defense

DALLAS -- We've been over this, but you can bet the Heat have been over it way more. After not doubling Dirk Nowitzki on the Mavericks' final possession of Game 2, the Heat both deflected and shifted blame before practice Saturday regarding what happened when Nowitzki eased in a left-handed layup that would prove to be the game winner.

Dwyane Wade was adamant in denying that Chris Bosh was the problem with his defense on Nowitkzi. Wade told reporters, "Chris is a great player. We have a team defensive system. He played him well. Dirk made an unbelievable move. Our defensive rotations weren't there to help him out. It's never one guy on our team that wins or loses a ballgame."

So if it wasn't Bosh's fault...

Nowitzki said after practice that he expected the double to come once he got around Bosh. "On that last move," Nowitzki said, "I spun and expected actually somebody to be there and there wasn't. So I was able to get to the left and get to the basket."

Nowitzki said had he been doubled, he would have given it up. "If there would have been somebody there, I would have had to pass to somebody and hopefully let the weak side make a shot."

So who was supposed to be there? The easy answer is Udonis Haslem, charged with keeping the considerably taller Tyson Chandler off of the offensive glass, and apparently covering for Bosh on the game winner. When asked if put in the same position again down the stretch the Heat would elect to double Nowitzki, Haslem was defensive. As in tone, not subject.

"I don't know if we'll bring the double. I mean he made a good shot, he's a great player. Take it for what it was.'

Haslem said after Game 2's crushing collapse, nothing was really said in the locker room, and that everyone understood what they need to do. So the star says that it wasn't Chris Bosh's man defense that did them in, the rotations weren't right. And the rotation man says that Dirk just hit a good shot.

Gotta protect the Big 3.

It's apparent that the Heat are not over Game 2 emotionally. Whether that translates to a drive to respond in Game 3 or a sluggish start as the series shifts to Dallas remains to be seen.

objectivity is out the window.  This is an ugly time for the media.  Amid easy access to information, twitter etc...the media are no longer reporting the new, they want to be part of the news.

I don't get why the media won't accept that Dirk hit a game winning shot. If Lebron or Wade hit it they wouldn't be targeting the Mavericks asking who's fault it was. Totally ridiculous.

Blackmarv, why do you think that dallas will lose all 3 games at home, as to this point they have only lost once in Dallas during these playoffs.

Another typical arrogant heat fan and I'm not buying the good for dirk comment either.

I guess You could say that because the mavs haven't faced a team as good defensively as the heat but the heat haven't faced as good as the mavs offensively either.   22 points in a little under 7 minutes on the road too

Im not saying the heat can't do it but the odds are against it.  Looking forward to game 3 later tonight.

You guys are ridiculous. nobody said anything about KG nad Ray when they left their teams to win a championship.
please keep the hate to yourselves. It's pretty obvious these are the bad guys of the NBA for 2011, but don't make it so obvious. Dirk and the Mavs are probably going to lose the next three games in Dallas, and if he doesn't good for Dirk. But stop hating on these guys because they are in the Finals.

I blame the entire team from the coach on down. First let's address Spoelstra why give Bosh the assignment when you have Haslem or Lebron to gaurd him on the last possesion. Then you have Bosh, okay Dirk made a nice hesitation move off the spin but he's not the quickest guy. He couldn't even recover and challenge the shot. Then you have the other players particularly Lebron and Haslem who just watched as he strolled in for the layup. Make someone else beat you, how do you allow Dirk an easy layup in that situation unbelievable! It was a fitting ending to one of the biggest defensive lapses in Heat history. The Heat now have to man up and take the blame as a team, they all made mistakes during that epic collapse that even allowed the Mavs to be in a game winning situation in the first place. It's water under the bridge now. It's time to respond and play with focus and intensity for 48 minutes on Sunday. I have no doubt the Heat will do that, on to Dallas. Go Heat!!

I understand the Lebron hate and the Bosh hate.  But what's with the D-Wade hate?  That's just being hateful imo.

I agree, it's not all about the Heat.  Nowitzki made a clutch shot.  If he missed it, it would be about the presence of the Heat's defensive caused Dirk to adjust his shot and ......

What I really miss is Marv Albert.  He's the best basketball announcer ever and he's still great at it.  Why couldn't ESPN/ABC go get him for the Finals or at least do better than what they have.  The whole broadcast is so skewed towards the Heat it's pathetic.

Dirk just happened to be better at that particular time. Give the guy some credit. Its not ALL about the Heat, despite what some bigger-than-thou heads may think.
