Scottie Pippen seemed to rattle the very foundation of basketball when he claimed that LeBron James may (operative word: may) be better than Michael Jordan. It was a claim that virtually no one on the planet really believes, much less wants to hear.

But Pippen said it and with him knowing MJ as well as anyone, we all had to at least acknowledge the comments and therefore, discuss them to no end. Well, finally we have LeBron's thoughts. Via The Sun Sentinel:

“Mike was an unbelievable player,” James said Saturday. “I got a long way, long way to be mentioned as one of the all-time greats. Not even just Jordan – there are a lot of great players who have played in this league: Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and all these guys that are floating around with multiple rings. Bill Russell. All of these guys who have pioneered the game for me and [Dwyane Wade].

“I’m gracious, humbled by Scottie’s comments with him being a teammate of his and seeing Michael on a day-to-day basis. But as far as me? I don’t know. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m better than Jordan or if I’m not better than Jordan. It's not about that.”

First part? Great answer LeBron. Bravo. Quality move to acknowledge that not only that you shouldn't be mentioned alongside Jordan, you shouldn't be mentioned alongside about 20 of the all-time greats. Not at this point. Your career is still very young (LeBron is just 26 -- !!!) and you haven't accomplished near enough as a basketball player to have your named spread across with the likes of Jordan, Bird, Russell, Kareem, Magic Johnson or even heck, Scottie Pippen. Not yet.

(And can I point out here how I love how LeBron always misuses words? You're "gracious" of Scottie's comments? He obviously misspoke and it was accidental but he does that a lot. He's trying to answer humbly but the wrong word can confuse things.)

Second part? You started well and then of course you had to go ahead and LeBron your answer by saying you won't say you're as good or not as good. Ugh. You see LeBron, this is why these types of things always come back to get you. You tried to answer this in a humble way. You tried to acknowledge your place. But you aren't the one to determine these things anyway. So just say, "Oh man, I'm not Michael Jordan. Not by a long shot. Maybe one day, if I could get to my dreams. But I have a whole lot to accomplish before then." And leave it at that. Just put a period on it, tie a bow and walk away.

That's why young stars like Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant are so darn refreshing. There's no double-talk. No ego in anything they say. They always -- and I mean always -- let their game do the talking and leave the rest up to everyone else.

I just don't understand why you said you've got a long way to go and then came back and said you're not going to say you're not as good as Jordan. That's the type of stuff that bugs people. One day maybe you'll learn. I do agee with LeBron on his last line: It definitely isn't about that. I don't know why everyone is always hung up on comparing or finding the next Jordan. I think LeBron James should be the next LeBron James. A one of a kind, freak of a basketball player that has the potential to be an all-time great.

Maybe one day we'll actually have to have this discussion. With LeBron in The Finals chasing that first ring, he could be starting a long run of them. Then we might not be able to say he's not as good as Jordan either.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

Lebron was great in those three minutes but it's funny how he is getting all of the credit when if you look at the last 3:14 of that game (Bulls up by 12) Wade converted two baskets and a 4 point play (8 points) had the assist on one of LBJ's 3pt shots, had a steal, a rebound, and a blocked shot.   He had the same number of points, rebounds, steals as LBJ and he also had a block and an assist.  He should at least be given some credit but apparently LBJ did it all by himself.  I guess the Heat didn't need Dwayne's 4 point play or his two other baskets.  They must've won by 9.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

Jordan only played with two HoFers during his second 3peat run, not the first.  Also, it's been said that Pippen was overrated BECAUSE of Jordan.  I'm not saying that a necessarily agree, he was an outstanding defender, but the argument could be made that Pippen wasn't as good as Jordan made him look.
But that's exactly my point. As he got older, they provided him with another Hall of Famer, one who did all of the "dirty work" to help shoulder the load. If they don't, who knows, maybe we're talking only three to four rings for Jordan, and suddenly his carreer is a little less impressive. Playing with Hall of Famers is something that never would've happened in Cleveland for LeBron. And even if you think Pippen was overrated because of Jordan........there still wasn't any teammate for James close to resembling a Scottie Pippen over there in Cleveland.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

You do realize Scottie Pippen is on the list of the 50 greatest players to ever play the game don't you? So that's a pretty ignorant statement.
Yes, I realize Pippen is in the 50 greatest.  That list is obviously subjective.  Pippen is on that list BECAUSE of Michael Jordan.  He would have won nothing without MJ.  MJ made him look good night in and night out.  Plus, there's a big difference between the guys who barely made the list (ie, Pippen, Drexler) and the guys who define the NBA (Michael, Majic, Bird, Russell).  Lebron is in the former of the two lists.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

Lebron is arguably the greatest "athlete" to play the game but he'll always come up woefully short against Jordan in any GOAT discussion.  Unless you were born after about 1975 or so and didn't see all of Jordan's career, I can't understand how you could even begin to think Lebron is even close.   Regardless of teammates, coaches, etc.,  Jordan played in the most competitive era of basketball history.  The league was laden with HOFers and big men who could legally kill you on the court were on every team.   The flagrant committed on Lebron by Boozer was probably on par with Laimbeer's second personal in a regular season Bulls-Pistons 80's matchup.

With the way these games are officiated Jordan would light this league up like a Christmas tree.  Heck at 40+ he put up 50 for the Wizards.  Chris Webber, a bonifide NBA star who played against both MJ and LBJ in their primes was asked how Jordan would do if he was playing in his prime today and he said: "Jordan would average 40 points per game with the way fouls are called for hand checks and so forth."  The bottom line is that even if Lebron wins 6 titles with the Heat, in the eyes of people who saw both players at their absolute best, Lebron always will come up short.  Plus the fact that the Big 3 in Miami teamed up to win a title will always lessen any of James' accomplishments.   &
nbsp; The last time I checked, that logo on the shoe is still MJ not LBJ.

And again, Jordan was fortunate enough to play with two Hall of Famers.

U of P Pilots..........ur an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHAQ WAS THE GO TO GUY NOT WADE!!!! HOW WOULD A ROOKIE BE THE GO TO GUY???????????????LMAO  some people should just shut their  mouths, especially when they have no freakin clue!
Actually, bro, you have no "freakin clue".  During the regular season, Wade put up 27 ppg to Shaq's 20.  Wade averaged 28 ppg during the Heat playoff run in '05-'06.  Shaq?  18.  Second, Wade was in his 3rd year at that point, not a rookie.  So keep "LMAO" because you're an idiot.

Did I miss something or is Lebron's career over? Did you miss the last three minutes of the Eastern Conference Finals when a 12 point deficit was erased on Will? Guys please let this man live.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

Lebron is nothing but another Scottie Pippen.  He's a role player who is only going to win because he's riding the coattails of others.  Lebron had a chance to be mentioned in the same breath at Michael, but that was put to rest with "the decision."
You do realize Scottie Pippen is on the list of the 50 greatest players to ever play the game don't you? So that's a pretty ignorant statement. And have you watched these playoffs? LeBron isn't riding anyone's coattails, but he is providing some long enough for the entire team to stand on. And again, Jordan was fortunate enough to play with two Hall of Famers. Right now, the consensus seems to be that James is only playing with one in the form of Dwyane Wade. So what James has accomplished this playoffs may be more impressive than anything Jordan has done considering that according to all of the haters, outside of James and Wade (Jordan and Pippen) all they have is a solid all star in Bosh and absolutely no bench. So why you guys have been spending the entire season ripping apart the Heat and all of its flaws and stating why they can't and won't win this year because they have nothing outside of the big "2-1/2", you dummies have actually been building a case for the greatness of James especially should he bring home the title.
