Westbrook storms off without shake after loss

In 2009, LeBron James left the floor without shaking his opponent's hand after losing to the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals. It was a humongous upset. For the MVP, it was a disappointing  act of classlessness in the eyes of many. Some felt that as a competitor, you never want to accept losing. Most, though, felt that sportsmanship dictated that you owe it to your opponent and say "Congratulations, good luck." James was killed for it in the press. Looking back, it may really have been the start of James' P.R. fall from grace. It is considered classless to just walk off the floor.

Russell Westbrook just walked off the floor. Thirty-four second mark here:

Now, first of all, Jason Terry, I know you're excited. It's the Finals. Pull up once you see the clock. It's done. No need for the extra dunk.

Moving on, Westbrook also declined to go to the podium after the game, with James Harden at the presser instead. Westbrook might have simply been too upset to make the presser. After a game where he scored 31 points (on 28 shots) and had eight rebounds, five assists with only three turnovers, he was obviously disappointed. Westbrook constantly soared for rebounds and pushed the ball to get buckets in transition. With Kevin Durant off for most of the game, Westbrook again tried to lead, with successes and failures. Westbrook also lost his emotional cool with a technical in the second half by shoving Jason Terry.

It's going to be a pivotal summer for Westbrook. He's shown tremendous ability and became an All-Star. But his immaturity and decision-making led people to question his role on the Thunder. A stellar performance by James Harden at the point guard position only complicates matters. Westbrook's going to have to decide what role his career is going to be defined by for the next several years, and he's going to have to grow up a bit to learn to control his emotion and harness it in a positive way.

And he's going to get killed in the press for not shaking his opponents' hand after another late-game collapse.

The Thunder have been in the league  a total of about 10 mins and they already have the reputation as poor sportsmen. Wow, usually takes a few years. Is the state of Oklahome good for anything? Water downed beer and ugly women. Thank you

Come on people - what are we teaching kids?!?!  Well because you are immature, it's ok to be an ass . . .  seriously!?!?!  I would hope that we would start at a young age teaching how in a win or lost that you shake the hand of your competetor and say good game. You can still have the fire of being competitive and not be disrespectful.  I love what KD did - he spoke his heart.  When asked if he was glad for Dirk getting back to finals he said hell no.  Cus it meant that he wasn't there.

No way you can say Dirk got all the calls and Durant didn't.  Collison was mauling Dirk.  Dirk wasn't getting the foul calls he usually gets.  Get a clue.  The series went 5 games.   When Durant, Westbrook and Hardin drove to the bucket, they ended up at the foul line a ton.  When Dirk drove to the bucket, he had to look back at the ref and wonder how hard did he have to get hit to get a call.

Blaming the Mavs win on the refs is ridiculous.

AMEN brother, AMEN!

Rondo has dealt with equal if not worse criticism from the media.  I care more of the on court issues over being upset at how he played, and not wanting to congratulate the Mavs.  Right now I just don't think he has the basketball i.q. to be an elite PG.  That's something he'll have to prove throughout his career.  Don't confuse stat lines with actual performance.  Scoring 25 points, and shooting a high volume to get those points is a lot different than taking good shots the entire game.

Although I am not excusing Russell Westbrook for his lack of sportsmanship, I witnessed the press wear this young man down night after night.  ESPN would not give this kid a break.  In the beginning of the playoffs, I saw Westbrook play with an undeniable youthful exuberance.  After repeated unwarranted criticism, Westbrook's confidence dwindled. Although OKC won the second game with Westbrook on the sidelines, I think it was a poor coaching decision.  Russell can put up as many points as Durant on any given night.  I love Kevin Durant and all that he stands for inasmuch as they are both just 22 years of age.  Don't pit these kids against each other.  They could be magical together.  The coaching staff could stand to tweak the lineup a tad.  Perhaps Westbrook is not a true point guard.  However, that would be a coaching issue.  I would change the lineup to include Westbrook and Durant as starters.  I would give Harden a shot at point guard as he has the length, poise, and physicality to compete with the best of them. Westbrook reminds me of a young Dwayne Wade or Allen Iverson.  Play him as such!  I'm a woman and even I know that Westbrook likes to score.  So, let him!  Between Durant and Westbrook there is enough shine to go around!  I would fill in the last two starting positions with Ibaka as center and round it out with Kendrick Perkins as a shot blocker. Ibaka is great defensively as well. Now, we have a strong starting lineup and the bench isn't too shabby either.  Kendrick Perkins in still not 100% yet.  I urge him to put in some work over the summer and forget about not being a Celtic!  Perkins needs to mature as well and learn when to reign in his emotions.  Make it do what it do!!

All things considered, OKC has had a remarkable season and these young men are to be congratulated for a job well done.  For all of the critics, watch and learn.  These young men are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come if everyone will just give them a chance to work through their growing pains!

Peace and Blessings!

It's funny that some jokers on here think the Mavs won because of race.

Get educated and out of your parent's basement.

Go Mavs Go!!
