Kobe 'surprised' at the Mike Brown hiring

The moment word started coming out that LeBron's old coach might become Kobe's new coach, we all were wondering, "Well, what does Kobe think about that?"

I think we all kind of assumed that he was likely consulted beforehand. No way the Lakers hire Kobe's next coach -- and Mike Brown, no less -- without at least asking what he thought, right?

Wrong.

According to SI.com, Kobe was "surprised" by the news about Brown and also a bit stunned that he wasn't part of the decision-making process. Kobe before had been a solid backer of assistant Brian Shaw for the head coaching position and still reportedly remains in Shaw's corner.

Shaw, of course, would be a bit more of a continuation of things that the Lakers had under Phil Jackson while Brown will come in and look to implement his own system and structure. For a superstar that might be looking at his final coach, I'm sure Kobe would've liked to have a say.

Bryant doesn't have a ton of time left in the league and his next coach will be the man in charge of getting him to another NBA Finals. If that doesn't happen, Kobe's not going to be happy. So when he says "surprised" he really means, "They better have freaking gotten this right because they didn't ask me."

Obviously the Lakers wanted something new. With the way the Lakers collapsed against the Mavericks, Shaw's chances likely took a major hit. The Lakers likely saw a need for a new direction and Brown will provide them that. He's a coach that gels with players. His weakness has always been offense but I'm sure the front office is assuming with all the firepower the Lakers have, offense shouldn't be too much of a problem.

It doesn't sound like the new Kobe-Mike Brown relationship is off to a rocky start by any means, but evidently Kobe didn't get to put in his two cents about the hire. Superstars like to have their say, especially when a decision will involve them. But the Lakers made their move and, quite honestly, Brown could be a very good fit for the team. It's all about Kobe, though, and I'm sure Brown knows that'll be his first job: Win Kobe over.

Kobe 'surprised' at the Mike Brown hiring

The causes for Brown's defensive stats and low scoring games is more like Detroit's in the '80's.  No Cavalier fast break, and Lebron dribbling the ball for 20 seconds on every possession.

How about chewing on Dwight Howard to Los Angeles in 2012?  It's far more likely than Kobe going to Orlando.

If Brown puts in a system that Kobe doesn't like, that'll spell disaster because Kobe has gotten comfortable with Jackson's triangle offense !
Actually, Phil admitted that he still had a problem getting Kobe to run the triangle offense.  That was as early as this year.  Kobe is going to do what Kobe is going to do, plain and simple.  He did it with Jackson and he'll do it with Brown.  The fact that Brown has worked with a big ego that's been given special priority, even over him, will help him deal with Kobe's ego.  When the play breaks down or Kobe doesn't like the play that's called, he'll call his own play.  He's been doing it for years.

Kobe 'surprised' at the Mike Brown hiring

What does Kobe being surprised by the decision = that he won't play for coach Brown. It's funny that allmost everyone wants Mike brown to fail, I hope I'm wrong but I hear people talk about over the hill Rick Adleman, and terrible Mike Dunleavy. There wasn't much to choose from in the coaching pool, either you take a chance on Brian Shaw, who I would have preferred or the other retread coaches.

After coaching an overachieving Cavalier team to the best record in the league, he was fired after losing to a better team in the playoffs. The reason he was fired was to kiss up to Lebron, then Lebron left they should have given him a chance to succeed. I think he will be a great hire for the Lakers, Kobe did say that championship teams start with defense, so in essence he got what he wished for.

Uh.. Kobe = Player.  Shut up and play.  If he gets a job in the front office, then he can piss and moan.  Till then shut it.

Coach getting 4 million plus.....

I wish I could be consulted before they hire my boss.  As soon as I heard this I e-mailed the two other people on the planet that I know that follow the NBA-that KOBE would be demanding a trade within 2 years.  Mark my words.

Kobe 'surprised' at the Mike Brown hiring

I think everyone is knocking on brown a little to hard into this. Brown is a great coach who made a crappy team a top 5 defensive and top 5 offensive team. Of course they had Lebron James but look at what that team did once Lebron and Brown left. He couldn't have been all the defense. Second he took this team to 2 sixty win season. He's the 5th highest winning percentage active coach to date and we need a defensive mind.... offense isn't an issue, we've got the offensive talent but defense is where we look so weak last season. All these talks have come out about Lebron and Browns negative relationship and how Lebron didn't trust him, theres been several reports stating that Lebron is very self obsorbed and thinks he deserves the world. Anyone thats nicknames them selves "The Chosen One," I probably wouldn't get along with either but If Brown was able to do all this with the Cavs, imagine what he can do with a stack team like LA. Now lets see what young we can bring to the team...and last but not least... I've been a Lakers fan for a long time and I finally feel like i can say... Who cares what Kobe has to say! Yes he's done alot for this team over the years but hes no where near the same player he used to be, No more last second game winners... the injures are finally starting to catch up and I think this is when we will see LA start to make there turn for the future. He is a player... he's not God, he doesn't make or break this team.. If he wants to step away from LA then we will just get the next great... Sorry Kobe but your opinon doesnt matter anymore...

Kobe 'surprised' at the Mike Brown hiring

The Lakers may have backed themselves into a hole with Kobes contract. I really cant see a team giving up half its roster for Kobe.  Wouldnt that be the case if the Lakers were to trade him?  Somehow Mike Brown and Kobe will have to make this work.  I honestly feel Kobe is going to be gunning for the scoring title next year regardless of who is the coach. Bynum is not going to sit still for this and we are going to see Kobe vs Shaq II.  Either Brown is going to have to convince him to play team or let him do his thing.  Lakers better hope he has some good persuasive skills.
