Derrick Rose's non-MVP 4th

It had to catch up with him at some point. Derrick Rose entered Wednesday night's Game 2 as the league leader in usage in the playoffs. If you're not metric-inclined, put simply, Rose was responsible for more possessions than any other player in the postseason, being in control for 35.7 percent of all the Bulls' possessions. That's a heavy load to bear. And in the fourth quarter against the Heat in Game 2, it caught up with Rose.

The MVP finished just 7-23 from the field, harassed and bothered both by the Heat's double-teams on the perimeter and at the rim where the help defense was helped tremendously by, you guessed it, Udonis Haslem. But especially bad was his fourth quarter, in which the Bulls scored just 10 points, while LeBron James scored nine. Here's Rose's fourth quarter.

That's it. 2-4 free throw shooting, three assists, 0-4 from the field. The shot chart is equally unkind to DRose.

Yeah, 2-10 at the rim. Rose admitted post-game, "I missed a lot of shots I normally make tonight." Rose chalked it up to "one of those games." Which is partially true. But the Heat were much more determined to shut off Rose's perimeter pass-off options while maintaining their attack on Rose at the same time. The Heat spent less time on help defense at the elbow during Rose's drives and more time doubling on the perimeter, switching up coverage, and attacking the rim. They forced Rose to make hyper-aggressive moves toward the basket and challenged him hard there, making tough shots tougher. Rose can hit those tough shots. Making them that much tougher was enough to cause that 2-10 layup count.

Rose was even missing free throws.

We've yet to see the MVP Derrick Rose in this series. The Bulls' offense has lived on offensive rebounds but at some point, they need to not need three tries to score. Haslem started chipping away at the Bulls' work on the offensive glass and the result was the Bulls being unable to score, again, just ten points in the fourth for the top seed in the East.

The best player for the Bulls had a bad night, with some help from the Heat on that front. Unless the MVP gets back on track, it's going to be an uphill climb for the Bulls. One can only feast on bench play and glass work for so long before your stars have to make a play.

You can get all the bets you want in Vegas at great odds since the Heat are more than a 2 to 1 fav. have at it pal.

I dont think the "one of those games" argument is very valid. I mean sure they were missing some open shots but thats how good teams win...they make them. They beat the Heat the first game because they got 2-3 offensive chances per time down the floor. A good team makes the open shots, and while Rose was missing shots he usually makes...it did become obvious that the Bulls will have a hard time when Rose can't freely drive to the basket. The fact is they CAN"T have "one of those games" and expect to win the series. You can't brush it off as a fluke because this happens whenever Rose has a bad game. Bulls fans have to be hoping Rose has great performances every night becuase his teammates have trouble making the open shots, let alone creating for themselves. I don't believe in the "Better Team" arguement when your entire offense goes through one person, and if that one person faulters, the entire offense goes away. I think the offensive boarding actually covers up many of the holes the Bulls have...and they simply can't rely on getting 3 chances per offensive try.

TFunk, lets not discount the home-cooking last night. Refs did their best to keep that game close when Miami was about to clow it wide open.
LOL what!? What game were you watching? There was no "home cooking" as you put it. The most crucial calls down the stretch went against the Bulls and in the end it was like 26 free throws for the Bulls and 24 for the Heat. Quit making crap up.

Bulls shot 36%..... held to 75 pts.  Thtats just one of those games.  I'll take  all bets on this series because i just dont see chicago losing.  But I dont think its all on Rose. Boozer hasnt really been as effective as he should be for that pay check. And Korver has been terrible.  They need Gibson to play more and Asik too. Chicago will continue to out rebound Miami, but they need to defend the perimeter better than last night. I still say bulls in six.

For God's sake Thibs, keep Korver on the bench!!!! It's like playing 5 on 4 out there.

TFunk, lets not discount the home-cooking last night. Refs did their best to keep that game close when Miami was about to clow it wide open. The Bulls wont get that luxury in games 3 and 4.  If the Bulls win in 6, as you predict, they would need to win 2 out of 3 in Miami. I really dont see that happening.

Derrick Rose's non-MVP 4th

i think it is funny that mike greenberg on M and M in the morning said the the bulls have to play a perfect game to beat the heat. What!? the bulls crushed the heat in game 1 and were tied with 5 minutes to go after shooting 35% from the field. not to mention 3-20 from 3 point land and missing 10 free throws. the bulls had quite a few opportunities at the end but just couldn't cash in. the bulls will win this series in 6. i don't know how everyone thinks that the heat will win this series, it seems obvious to me that the bulls are the better TEAM

Not sure why in games like this Thibs elects to keep Rose is so long in the second half... some rest woiuld of helped, CJ and crew did quite well coming in earlier and Lebron when he got rest to start the 4th went crazy.

If the Bulls are the best team and Rose is the MVP... they will adjust and win again. It's up to the coach now to figure out how to get a different outcome in game 3. They need to leave Miami with atleast a 2-2 or it's game over.

Good analysis, Rose struggled pretty much all night.  Don't forget about Boozer not making much of an impact.  If Rose couldn't get to the hole, drop it into Boozer and let him work.  As an offense you have to have a couple of scoring options.  Running everything through Rose today was too predictable.  It didn't help that the bulls including Korver, Deng and Bogans were missing a lot of open looks early on.
