Ron Artest ejected for clothesline on J.J. Barea

Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest was ejected for clotheslining Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea. Posted by Ben Golliver.

This right here is the definition of losing without dignity.

In the closing seconds of a 93-81 Game 2 loss, Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest clotheslined Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea for no apparent reason.

The Lakers were in a soft full court press, down by 11 points with 24 seconds remaining, when Artest came over to double team Barea with Lamar Odom. Rather than play defense, Artest reached his right arm out, fully extended, and grabbed Barea in the face, causing his head to snap backwards.

Artest was whistled for a technical foul for the play, his second of the game, and promptly ejected. There's a good chance the NBA league office will review the play and a possibility that further action could be taken against Artest, including the possibility of a fine and/or suspension.

Here's a look at the video of Artest's technical foul and ejection.

After the game, Lakers.com reported: "Phil Jackson said there was a 'good chance' Artest could be suspended for his late T on Barea; obviously, he hopes not."

Although there's no rational explanation for Artest's action, one possible motivating factor: Barea had been cutting up the Lakers down the stretch, finishing with 12 points and four assists in 17 minutes off of Dallas' bench. Barea scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lakers are now down 0-2 in the series, having lost both games in front of their home crowd at Staples Center.

If I was Artest I'd be more worried about Khloe Kardashian than a fine. That family's evil.

Artest should be suspended at least two games.  One for the clothesline on JJ Barea and another for kneeing Lamar Odom in the package.  In the Nationial Football League, that clothesline would be a personal foul and probably a fine after the game.  As for the knee in Lamar's ovaries, I am surprised Lamar didn't kick Artest's ass on the court.

"BUT because it was Ron Artest, because his intentional foul also happened to be on the guys head, and because the game was decided, people freak out. T him up, yes, eject him (if it hadnt been his second), maybe, but suspending him is a bit much in my opinion"

Dwing

Really? Just and intentional foul?  He hit a guy in the head and then held on.  Yeah he should be gone at least game three.

Old habits die hard, I suppose. Although, I'll give him a bit of slack because he does seem to realize what he's done after-the-fact, the damage to Lamar Odom's balls notwithstanding.

Sigh. I don't want to hate on Artest, God knows he seems to be trying to clean himself up, but when he does boneheaded stuff like this when the game is over, it's hard to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Note to the Lakers: Stop Barea from dicing you during the contest and your hottest head won't want to decapitate him out of sheer frustration at the end of the game.

Artest is an idiot, but this is completely on Phil Jackson.  When you have a loose cannon like Artest he should not be in the game to display his frustration when the game is out of hand.

"BUT because it was Ron Artest, because his intentional foul also happened to be on the guys head, and because the game was decided, people freak out."

That's a lot of things.  Artest does have a history, and you can't clothesline someone in the head even during a box-out under the basket, and this was purely out of frustration after the game was essentially over.  And he had already shoved Marion to get his first T.  Other players (Dwight Howard comes to mind) have gotten recent playoff suspensions just for swinging an elbow while protecting a rebound.  This was not in any slight sense a "basketball play", and most teams don't even foul down 11 with under 30 seconds left, so it wasn't just "intense defense" either.

The NBA surely does have some private rooting interests, and one of those interests is surely the Lakers (though, as I have argued many times here, I see no conclusive evidence of a conspiracy to have the schedule or the refs intentionally favor the Lakers.)  But they cannot withhold a suspension just because it happens to be a pivotal upcoming game.

I'm sorry, I just don't follow your logic - It's NOT because it was Ron Artest.  It's because out of pure frustration and a gross lack of decorum that he hit a man in the face.  You can't say he was just trying to intentionally foul someone as there was only 24 seconds left and they were down by 11.   The Laker's had no chance to win at that point and that simply pissed Artest off to the point of being malicious.  He has a history doing classless crap like this.  He categorically should be suspended.  You can't just hit someone in the face out of frustration.  Put a leash on the guy.

Once a thug always a thug. He tries to be Mr. sportsman off the court but his true colors show on the court just like the malice at the palace. Play like a professional NBA player not a stret baller.

That is right man. He is a sore loser and should be out in game 3. He will be suspended and watch the Lakers get tarnished in game 3!
