LeBron James' mother Gloria James arrested on South Beach.
Posted by Matt Moore

Update: 5:27 p.m.:  Here's a little reaction more from James in an ESPN.com video

"I think it's a sensitive subject. It's a personal matter and it's been taken care of ... She's fine ... She's fine. You have to move forward. It is my life, things you have to deal with, like I said, I try not to let it be a distraction. I have a job to do."

Update 2:10 p.m.: James spoke to reporters this morning on the subject.
"It's a sensitive subject. It's a personal matter that's being taken care of. She's fine."
Update 2:03 p.m.: Marcel Mutoni of SLAM and Bruce Arthur of the National Post  share this detail from the police report: LeBron sent a team executive , head of the Miami Heat charitable fund to pick up Gloria James from jail. That could have been Heat PR's call, to try and avoid the scene of LeBron or one of his associates picking his mother up from jail. This doesn't play well, either, however. The whole situation is painful and embarrassing and being played out in public.

Update 12:50 p.m.: A police report filed says that James was arrested under the influence of alcohol, and that the charge stemmed from her slapping a valet. Then later she became hostile with the cops. . From TMZ:
The cop says the valet explained that he retrieved James' car and put it on the valet ramp in front of the hotel while Gloria and a female driver stood around talking to people for 30 minutes. Finally, the valet says he turned the car off.

The valet says (Gloria James) then approached him and stated, "Where are my (expletive) keys(?)" and continued yelling profanities at the victim."

The report explains, "Then for no apparent reason the arrestee struck the victim with an open had [sic] across the right side of his face and in the process causing herself to lose her balance and falling to the ground."

After (Gloria James) was transported to a nearby police station, the report continues, a shift commander -- Lt. Acosta -- tried to speak with James who responded, "I'm trying to trust you but I don't trust your kind ... I don't trust that officer who arrested me."
via LeBron's Mom to Cop -- 'I Don't Trust Your Kind' | TMZ.com .

As you can see from the comments below, mankind is reacting to this story with the usual amount of restraint and caution of judgment it usually does.

Original report:  When LeBron James packed up and headed down to Miami (while keeping his home in Akron), he talked a lot about what was best for his family. This is probably not what he meant. LeBron's mother Gloria was reportedly arrested last night at the Fontainebleau resort on Miami Beach for misdemeanor assault. No other details are available, we'll keep you posted right here.

This isn't the first time James' mother has had trouble. She was last arrested on a DUI charge in 2006, and James famously had to tell his mother to sit down and stop yelling during a game. She's been at the center of a lot of controversy for James, and this probably won't help matters. But James continues to stick by her, because she's all the family he's got outside of his long-time girlfriend and his two sons.

James has clearly done what he can to try and provide her with a stable life to avoid situations like this. With the Heat dropping a key game in the playoff race to the Bucks Wednesday night, James can't afford to have these kind of distractions, with just a little over a week before playoffs begin.

Report: LeBron James' mother arrested in Miami

Gloria James is just like a lot of other women her age.  Remember she is barely 40 years of age if that.  She has plenty of money and I am sure she loves to go to high profile establishments like the Fontainbleu.  I am sure she went out in a very expensive outfit, probably just got her hair and nails done and had a lot of drinks.  Women get away with so much in our society this is just an act by a woman that goes on every day by women.  Only difference is it was the mother of a famous athlete.  Also she actually got arrested.  Often women are the ones that attack and the man gets thrown in jail becasue women are great liars and really work the pity angle.  What is amazing is she actually went to jail, which she probably deserved despite knowing only half the story as their are two sides to every story.

Report: LeBron James' mother arrested in Miami

Because if you read the police report on the TMZ link (provided by CBS Sports), it states that "Lt. Acosta approached James......" Lt. Acosta of the Miami PD is of Hispanic decent. If this was a white athlete's mother who said that about a black or Hispanic person, she would be deemed a racist and never seen in public ever again because of the backlash.  Gloria James is a dirtbag, drunk, racist.

Why would the statement 'your kind' refer to the cop's race?  My read on this was that she meant she doesn't trust cops, further validated by the additional statemnet 'I don't trust that officer who arrested me.'  I don't trust cops either, no matter what race either one of us is.

Report: LeBron James' mother arrested in Miami

Showtime:  I completely agree with point 1.  Point 2, not any son would stand by his mother.  Didn't someone just blame a shooting on his mom the other day?  I forget the particulars, but LBJ is acting like a standup guy in this situation.  Point 3, I didn't say she made the statement because she was under the influence of alcohol, just that she was.  I didn't in any way excuse her statement or try to explain it away.  As far as the bigot angle is concerned, if this was Jimmer Fredette's mom, there would be no talk of ghettos and the president.  You didn't go there, but many did.  I like to poke fun of our socialist president too, but I don't go for the low hanging fruit.  There are so many legitimate reasons to call him to the carpet.  Wait until my military pay stops and stand the _____ by.  Sealed

Report: LeBron James' mother arrested in Miami

"It's a pretty simple story about the mother of an NBA player with issues adjusting to her son's fame"

tfek70:  Wow, really, is that what the story is about.  Since you don't understand, let me tell you what the story is about.  It is about a rich, spoiled lady who lives vicariously through her son.  She obviously doesn't think that she has to play by the rules of society.  The next thing I will hear is that it was the worker's fault.

It's also about the son being a good son and standing by his mother.

Come on, what is LBJ going to say.  Any son would come to the defense of his mother.  This is not really a surprise is it.  So, you can't tell whether or not he is a good son simply because he did not throw her under the bus for her actions.

She made a racist statement while under the influence of alcohol.

She made a racist statement, not because she was under the influence of alcohol, but probably because she doesn't like non-blacks or people in authority.

I am in no way a small minded bigot.  Yet, I am smart enough to not make excuses for adults mistakes.  If she was 12 years old you could make an excuse for her.  However, she is a grown lady who thinks everyone is below her because her son is a superstar in the NBA.

I agree with you that this has nothing to do with the socialist President, but it is always fun to poke jabs at him.

Report: LeBron James' mother arrested in Miami

Wow, just wow.  It's amazing how many idiots post on this board.  It's a pretty simple story about the mother of an NBA player with issues adjusting to her son's fame and the lifestyle he is able to provide for her.  It's also about the son being a good son and standing by his mother.  Repeatedly.  This has nothing to do with Barack Obama.  She made a racist statement while under the influence of alcohol.  How does this reflect negatively on her son?  LeBron had 29 points and 8 assists, both above his season average in Wednesday's loss to Milwaukee.  Maybe his mom wasn't the reason they lost.  D Wade didn't play that game.  Shame on Matt Moore for even suggesting LeBron was distracted enough for it to affect his play.  Piss poor journalism trying to fan the flames of controversy.  Good job Matt Moore, you pitched a softball to a bunch of small minded bigots and they hit it out of the park.  I guess you know your audience.
