Coach Erik Spoelstra says players were crying following loss to Bulls
Posted by Matt Moore

There's no really great way to intro this, so I'll just go ahead and put it out there. After the Miami Heat blew yet another big first half lead, melting down in the fourth quarter, and losing to another team above .500, and another game decided by five points or less, Erik Spoelstra made a considerable error in the post-game presser. In the long list of things that you never want to reveal about your team, this is up there. From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel

First off, Erik Spoelstra made a huge mistake here. Even if that's the case, you say the Heat players are crying after a devastating playoff loss no one can blame you for. You say that after something emotional has occurred. You don't say that after losing to the third best team in the East in a game in March. Spoelstra's just revealed that the Heat are even softer mentally and emotionally than they're perceived to be. Players have emotions and have to deal with them, the pressure is intense, and as competitors, losses like today's disaster against the Bulls hurt. But you don't give the press this kind of a feeding bite. The fans, the media, sports radio, and every single person in Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Orlando are going to latch on to this and shake it for all it's worth. It doesn't help anything, it only hurts.

Second... really? This isn't a team of rookies. These are guys in their primes, pros and veterans who should be able to keep perspective. Instead, they're crying over this. It's not the stereotypical macho reactions to crying that are the issue, it's the lack of perspective, and an extension of the mental and emotional failure this team has exhibit all season whenever faced with any adversity. If Miami weren't stocked with star players, you'd be left thinking this team is basically the Atlanta Hawks, only not as mentally tough. That's quite a ways away from preseason expectations.

For what it's worth, Chris Bosh said postgame he wasn't one of the criers. That he had to be asked that and had to point out it wasn't true says something in and of itself.  LeBron James said that it's on him, which is the first sign of leadership he may have ever had. It'll be interesting to see if he can back up the talk with, you know, results.

Spoelstra: Heat players cry after Bulls loss

Spoelstra is a moron - crying in the locker room is absurd and troubling after a regular season loss, but what's more troubling is the Head Coach telling the world about it...If he gets fired and Riley takes over, we can trace it back to this moment. No way Pat Riley and the players are happy about this.

Spoelstra: Heat players cry after Bulls loss

For several years now, I've been referring to LeBron James as a crybaby.  But that was meant to be an insult, not an accurate description.  Come, a supposedly grown man crying because he lost a regular season game?  Hey LeBron, if you're reading this, strap on a pair, you big wuss.  At least try to act like a man, instead of a girl.  What a disgrace.

Spoelstra: Heat players cry after Bulls loss

I think Spoelstra's issue is that he won't take the reigns of the big 3 and make them play as a team. Ilgauskas goes from averaging close to 17 ppg in Cleveland, to a player that is often times unused. That's game plan and coaching. Miami needs to look at how the Sixers win and see that they have a pair of players that barely scratch 20 points, they usually get 3 guys that get 15-19 and they have a few guys that get 10-11 or are close at 8 or 9 points. But there you have it, 5 guys in double figures getting roughly 85 points. The others at 10 or below, account for 16-25 points. A little defense and 100+ holds up for wins. But the key to winning the tight games, they have 8 guys that come thru, not 2 1/2 that score and fail to hit the game winner. The Celtics showed the Heat that blueprint too. Teams like the Magic & Bulls are showing how tough they play even when they are down. Just my solution, but they need to break the dream team's individual stardom down to get an unselfish basketball team. As it is, the funniest play I've seen this season. LeBron's pass bouncing off Bosh's face vs the Magic. Talk about not being on the same page or aware of a play of passing lane ?

Please tell me this was taken out of context!!  I hope that Spo meant that they were making excuses and not that they actually released some tears.  If he gave it up that they were really crying then he just lost the team.  Look for a new coach in the future.  That type of event should stay in house and not be broadcast to the media.  For the life of me I cannot envision anyone crying, be it out of frustration or not,  over a ball game past high school. Someone sounds like they carry their emotions on their sleeves.  Not that there is anything wrong with it, but I hope it was not one of the big 3.  I cant imagine being one of the role players and seeing that from someone that is supposed to be a leader.
